Oil pan gasket leak and red oil sender light

I have 2004 325XI. I just replaced the CCV as it was clogged and replaced spark plus at the same time.

Now I have one last issue, oil pan gasket. Is this DIY type job? Also would this cause the oil sender to light up red sometimes? Its leaking for sure, but I just didn't think it was leaking so much to trip the oil pressure sender (red light). It does turn off sometimes, but then its back on. Car is full of oil, perhaps I should do an oil pressure test?

thanks

Are you sure it isn't leaking from the oil filter stand gasket (it usually looks like a leaky oil pan, that's why I ask). also the red oil light is a sign of low oil pressure, which isn't good news. Did you maybe swap plugs around when you did your pcv? two similar plugs are in that area that can possibly be swapped. The oil pressure switch should be a two pin connector with only one prong in it.

yeah, oil temp sensor has the two wire plug and oil pressure sender has the single wire connector. I replaced the oil pressure sender today, but get same results. Bentley book says min 7psi at idle and operating temp. I got 10psi with my oil pressure gauge. I tested for 45 min, and lowest pressure observed was 10psi @ idle (700rpms). Pressure at 2000 rpms was 35psi, and 58psi at 4000 rpms. I replaced the oil 5w/30 and filter (BMW) and got same results.

Perhaps time for new oil pump?

Should I switch to 10w/40?

I should mention that the red oil light only comes on during idle as soon as RPMs hit ~890 the oil light turns off. Also the light only turns on when the engine is warm, because when its cold there is higher pressure.

Does anyone know at what PSI the light turns on?

thanks

Make sure it's not the OFHG leaking. Make sure all the oil pan bolts are tight- oil pan doesn't usually leak and can often just be tightened if it does.

You may have sludge if the ccv was clogged. Have you taken the valve cover off?

I have not taken off the valve cover in ~5 years.

I did have CCV issue for 100% certain and it was blocked, hence I think this caused excessive pressure and oil to leak from oil pan gasket. I ran out of time this weekend to clean off the oil pan area and check for new leaks. The oil filter housing and gasket was changed 2 years ago and no leak from that area now. Also I should mention when I changed the plugs (when doing CCV this weekend) that the plugs certainly burned some oil as they were black.

Perhaps sludge under valve cover is causing low oil pressure? Easy enough job to check - I'll check this coming weekend. Any other easy things to check before going route of oil pump? Strange thing is why my Snap On oil pressure gauge always showed 10psi @ idle (700rpm) when warm and Bentley book says 7psi is ok.

I switched from Mobile 1 5w/30 to Castrol Edge SPT 10w/40 and no longer get the red oil pressure light at warm idle. I plan to check under the valve cover anyway.
