For most vehicles you don't need a transmission flush until you've reached over a hundred thousand miles. And even then most manufacturers don't recommend a transmission flush at all! That's right they do not recommend you ever get one - do you know why that is? It's because through normal wear and tear of the transmission, just like in the engine, there are small bits and pieces of metal, dirt and sludge that will form from time to time.
When you hook up one of these transmission flush machines to your transmission it forces through high pressure degreasing and other cleaning solutions through all the gears and connections and often times this causes foreign particles, tiny metal pieces, dirt and sludge to clog little ports and parts of the transmission that will end up in certain failure of the transmission. You are always better off with draining the transmission fluid and replacing it if it is dirty or discolored rather than flushing the transmission fluid. Flushing the transmission has been known many times to actually ruin the transmission. Sometimes this failure of the transmission won't occur for a few days or a few weeks. But make no mistake, the cause is almost always a transmission flush. Sometimes it only takes one transmission flush to cause a problem other times, usually on newer cars, it can take several. But believe me at some point in time and usually sooner rather than later it will cause a serious problem with the transmission. Jiffy Lube recommends transmission flushes solely for the profit. That's it. They do not care in the slightest bit about their customers and their vehicles. Nor will they pay to have your transmission fixed due to a faulty recommendation on their behalf (which just about every recommendation for a transmission flush is a faulty recommendation). So, next time you hear a recommendation for a transmission flush tell them no. If they keep harping you about it then take your vehicle somewhere else for service. Do not get a transmission flush!

Change the damn fluid. Forget what the manufacturer stated, they just want you to buy another BMW by 100-125k when the trans fails.
Like anything else, if you change the fluid and keep things clean they last longer. The transmission flushes are not "high power" they just pump fluid through so the entire fluid is swapped out, this is the only real way to get the fluid out of the torque converter & trans cooler. Many of the trans failures after a flush are really do to a problem transmission that someone hopes or sells a fluid flush to hopefully fix a mechanical problem with a fluid change! I have my 6 speed VW Tiptronic valve body out for repair at this time as the valve bodies wear out because the valve are harder than the valve body. VERY COMMON problem. I am the original owner and the car was not abused, just a fact that all the valve bodies wear out, VW even extended the trans warranty to 7 years/100k miles because of these problems. Only 72k miles on it, but this is typical. Luckily the trans pan had no trash and VERY little metal on the magnets. I should have my valve body back in a few days and be back in business. Fluid change would not have helped that trans, but the fluid change I am doing now as a part of the valve body will help the lifespan of the transmission.

I will add (like I've added many times before) that even ZF recommends the trans fluid be serviced.

it lasts long enough on a manual gearbox, like few decades. But most time it develops a slow leak and you have to top it off few years at a time.

Very few torque converters have drain plugs these days (I think the last one I saw was on a mid 60's Ford or GM trans??), so the easy way to change the fluid is with one of the pump systems. They also displace or measure what comes out so many times you put the exact same amount back in the with the machine.
This may not be the best method, this may be why the Jiffy Lube team strikes out from time to time when doing transmission flushes. Again if you do not change/flush the fluid, and you end up with sludgy trans fluid, you are in trouble. Transmissions are not supposed to have oxidized fluid, sludge or a lot of debris or metal in them. The ONLY way to address these issues is by changing/flushing the fluid.

You should ask GoingNuts about lifetime parts.

I'm not a believer in any of those automatic flushing machines or procedures. That said, if I buy an unknown car I'll usually change ALL of the fluids right away (regardless of what the PO states), inspect the fluids and put in what I prefer. I'll usually do another complete fluid change very quickly - after only a few days of driving. It's almost like a flush by dilution but without actually flushing anything; just two quick fluid changes.
I don't want to open up a can of worms but I have been known to run a few quarts of diesel fuel in the crankcase as a cleaner/de-greaser and only under very certain circumstances. |
