The original argument was that the ZHP is/is not different than the 330 rack with the same part number ending in 712. Stop twisting the new information to conveniently fit your ZHP agenda. We are discussing yellow tag 712 racks found on 9/01+ 330s and all ZHPs: are they identical or not.

All other information provided such as purple tag 678, etc is just extra info and isn't relevant to the original discussion.

You know darn well that having a different part under the same 712 part number defies all logic and goes against all traditional knowledge with BMW part numbers or any maufacturers part catalogging system, for that matter. Yet you conveniently ignore this aspect, rush over the information, no matter how sloppily it's presented, and try and make this fit exactly how you want.

I'd suggest we stop going around in circles until we have actual consistent proof. We need to compare yellow tag 712 racks sourced from both 02+ 330 and ZHP cars. I still suspect they're identical and any differences shown in those pictures were an error and/or misunderstanding of the racks we are trying to compare info we are trying to obtain.

I did a little research and this purple tag 678 rack comes up as part# 32136755065 (5 at the end instead of 6755064) for RMFD. This comes up as PRE 9/01 in the US for 323, 325, 328, 330. It comes up in EUROPE for the 318ti, 320i, etc. Enter the part numbers for yourself and see.

32136757651 (1 at the end for RMFD) comes only on 9/01+ 330s, according to RealOEM.

According to RealOEM, looks like the purple tag rack is current for all production years in Europe whereas in the US purple tag STOPS 9/01. And maybe thats how you ended up with a purple tag 04 rack.

This site says the purple tag is for models without sport package:

So, can anyone tell me what the part # is for the 'least favored' racks that came in the early 330i, pls? My build date is 4/01, right on the cusp of a change....

That would be BMW part number 32136755065 and 32136755064. (I think one digit increase at the end for remanufactured racks) That's the purple tag 678 rack which comes on the 318, 323, 325, 328, and early 330.

This 32136755065 rack shows up as RealOEM as being installed on early 330s pre 9/01. I believe this would be the infamous overboosted rack.

9/01+ production 330 and subsequently 330 ZHPs switched to 32136757650 or 32136757651 (1 at the end for remanufactured)

The question is do these late model yellow tag racks ending in 712 (32136757650 and 32136757651) bear the same internals whether installed on the regular 330 OR 330 ZHP.

Nobody has been proven wrong. Hence why Rich is going to do more comparisons. The community for years (close to a decade), including myself, has been going by 1) photos of actual racks, and 2) BMW part numbers. As far as I'm concerned, until we open racks and have photographic evidence of rack tags, their build dates, and corresponding photograph of internal parts, nothing has changed. I don't think you're truly understanding what we're talking about here and the original scope of this discussion.

If it turns out indeed the ZHP rack is different, I'll end up getting one. Question is... how would I choose what yellow 712 rack to get? You'd have to see it with your own eyes coming from a ZHP, I guess. Then how would you know that rack itself is original to that car?

That stinks! I haven't driven many other e46s, but compared to my last car, an E30 with a "M" rack, this one seems a bit rubbery.
If I replace it, the best would be the "712" zhp rack (which RACK Doc would charge me extra for since I don't have a "712" core to give him), but
what would be the second best choice for a replacement? The "650-651"? I don't mind the speed of this rack, but it is less precise (& yes, more rubbery) than I would prefer.

Honestly I don't know. I haven't tested the other ones. I'd stick with a 712 rack. Lets wait for results from the tear downs!

The 712 racks are ALL the same. There is no regular 712 rack and there is no zhp 712 rack. The 712 rack IS the zhp rack. It did, however, come on other 3 series at random (it would seem)
If your non zhp 330 came with a 712 rack it is in the minority. The majority came with the 678 zf rack or the TRW rack (purple tag)

READ THE REST OF MY POST! All the information you need is in my post. Your 330 is a freak 330 and is in a minority that received that rack. The 712 rack is different than the commonplace 330 rack.

No it's not a freak. It just likes to think that.

RealOEM specifies the 712 rack for all 330 (330s ONLY) post September, 2001. Period.

RealOEM specifies the purple tag STOPS at 9/01. Everyone else check your 330s and report back with your rack tag and build date. I think that's the better thing to do.
