Built some speakers - finished with mahogany veneer and solid poplar edging. These things are awesome. Scanspeak drivers, 2 1/4" fronts and backs, multiple internal ladder frames. A mix of mdf sandwiched with baltic birch plywood and internally coated with drywall compound mixed with flexible glue. They probably weigh 90 lbs each. When you rap your knuckles against them, they're completely dead - it's like knocking on the trunk of a 50 ft tall tree.
Originally built them without grills: ![]() When our son turned 1 I quickly realized they needed some protective grills: |

lol what inspired you to make a ukelele? Do they have tensioning rods inside like guitars as well? (Is that what they're called?)

Thanks!
Funny story - I had just started that project when I met my wife. I worked on them a few hours here and there over like 3 months. They took forever partly because there must have been at least 20 different stages where stuff needed to dry before the next step. And there were a dozen little problems to solve - like how to rout out the speaker holes just right so that the drivers would sit flush and how to do a decent cold veneer without a vacuum bag, etc. My wife would see me staring up at the ceiling at night and ask "what are you thinking about?" Instead of the expected "I was thinking about how much I love you", I would reply with something like "I was thinking about how to build a router jig so that I can rout out perfect 3/4" channels in the corners of my speakers so I can do solid wood edging without screwing up the veneer." She would think about that for a second and say "wow, men are really, really weird" Last edited by brew; 11-09-2012 at 01:25 PM. |

Here is a bike frame where I extended the stays and put an engine on it. It failed miserably but was fun playing with the welder and the 10 minutes that it did work were pretty exhilerating.

I made a pretty cool chess set out of aluminum and brass in college.
Currently working on finishing up this pond/fountain next to the entryway to my house ![]() Just finished all the tiling on the shower in a pretty significan remodel of the bathroom. Where the shower is, used to be a sink and a toilet.... along with a whole lotta other changes that aren't important Now just waiting for the 3/8" glass to come in for the door![]() When I take a break from the remodel, and get bored, I'm using some of the scrap material to build a stupid little house for the pup

I've been so busy i wasn't able to make progress on my DVD cabinet for a couple Months, but i mounted the doors and stained them last night.
Now top get the glass for the doors, install the back, finish staining it, and probably add some trim pieces to the top and bottom. I was thinking about getting glass custom etched, any good ideas of what would look nice? Sent from my DROID RAZR using Bimmer App |

That looks nice. No idea but I'd probably go with something with a slight grey tint so the lights on the units aren't distracting.

It's easier to make than a guitar haha and no they don't. It's a solid neck. I might try and fix it and learn to play even tho the uke is the red-headed step child of string instruments

One of my friends built one of those in school. It was a lot of fun, but if you actually sat down the vibrations in the seat would render you infertile a matter of minutes; it was painful.
