What engine is this?

Friend picked up a 1982 320i out of ****ing no where...he normally is an American/Jdm guy but he got just randomly got this...pretty excitied tho plan is to keep it looking old and just fix up the engine brakes etc

But my question is.... What type engine is this? Apparently the guy he bought it from swapped this in

Oh and when he brings it over he's like "and as you can see my one piece exhaust is a little loose" as he just shakes the whole thing as it moves around effortlessly and hits the ground and what not ....I cringed but I know he will definitely have fun with the car and enjoy it unlike most people (like me) who are too worried about something breaking to do too much with the car

Valve cover just looks like a regular M10. I'm not familiar with that intake manifold though.

Fuel injected M10 with the e21 specific intake. It was a little more refined than the 2002tii injection system.
