jb or any other bmw tech (2973/2974) code info

i've brought this up before, for years i've had the 2973 and 2974 (pre o2 sensor banks 1 and 2 wires/connectors) codes

i just keep clearing them ,as the first time i actually checked and there is nothing wrong with wires or plugs, sometimes they will be there for weeks and not trigger a light , sometimes not, no rhyme or reason this way

i'm pretty sure jb said this is a known glitch

now i'm in a spot where the light was close to inspection, i cleared them and then all 5 systems were in the not ready state, so it failed, 1.5 hour wait

so today i go back after 100 miles, fail, 2 system still not ready, o2 heater and evap , 2.5 hour wait, i'm going to go again wens, but i see the 2 codes are there, if it triggers a light before then or on the way, i'm screwed

so now i've had enough, i'd like to know exactly what update i need to fix these codes so i can call dealers for price

Not sure how often you have these codes show up but in any event you need a scan tool that will show you Emission Readiness Code state so you will know when you can actually get your car inspected without getting kicked back for Emission Readiness not set.

Additionally, you really need to study up on your states Emission Testing tules.

Many states allow 1-2 Emission Readiness States not to be clear and they will still pass the car if there is no CEL lit. Usually these rules are newer cars may have up to 1 Readiness State not clear, older cars may be allowed up to 2 Readiness States not clear.

Many times the inspectors are even unaware of these rules as well, so you need to do your homework and come prepared.

I assume you cleared the codes and did not drive the car enough to clear out all the Readiness Codes. Usually this takes 2-4 cold start cycles and some part highway or extended cruise about 45 MPH.

If you search Federal Drive Cycle you will likely find info on this.

Good luck, what I am suggestion does nothing for your specific error codes, but may allow you to get your car inspected regardless.

If you have a Driod based phone or tablet, $5 Torque Pro App and the sub $20 ELM327 Bluetooth ODB adapter from Amazon is a nice tool for under $25 to clear, read and monitor ODB codes.

i'm fully aware i can have one in the not ready state

now ,if i get an update from the dealer i have to get my active flash redone, discounted tho so, that's nice of them

pia

i have a peake , but that doesn't tell me readiness, what does?

I have to check, but the $20 ELM327 and the $5 Torque Pro app if you have an Android device is a cheap solution.

I would also inquire with Active if they can incorporate a similar fix in their flash? They may not tweak that portion of the flash so this may not be a solution.

mmmmmmm, he told me it would erase what they had done, and i'd have to pay $90 for a redo since i'm a previous customer, i payed $400 initially so , not bad

he didn't say anything about their flash addressing this glitch

edit, called viral,said in order for them to fix it they would need the car

i guess i'm not understanding, if this is a known glitch that bmw issued a bulletin on, why do i have to pay to correct it?

As for the aftermarket flash correcting the issue, just thought you should check into this.

What most aftermarket flashes do is have you read your factor DME load, then they modify it. Usually they only modify the fuel and timing maps, but since these cars have VANOS, a good aftermarket flash provider will also modify the VANOS timing as well.

Then the aftermarket flash providers can play with things like rev limits, top speed limits, cold start behavior, drive by wire throttle behavior and some can even open up the thresholds for sensor triggering too soon and/or being overly sensitive. However not all tune vendors have the insight, ability or technical know how to do more of the advanced things.

If active does not have a solution, you will need to go back the dealer, have them update your DME, you will then need to pull your new DME load, send it to Active and then they will tweak the file and you will reinstall it. At least this is the way many of the aftermarket flash venders work. Some may just overwrite your current DME load, but there can be some issues with this, especially if thing get corrupt during the flash process.

As for BMW paying for the DME update, well this only happens usually under the 48/50 bumper to bumper warranty or might be covered under the emission warranty, however, you are likely beyond both of those and if your car has just recently started having these problems, you may actually have a slightly different issue, especially since you have some modifications to your car.

nothing new, been clearing 2973/2974 for 5 yrs, with no other codes

yeah, i know i have to get it done by bmw, then again by active, just pisses me off that it's nothing i did yet i gota pay

that's life i guess
