Fuel Pump issue ?

Hey guys as you all know, hurricane sandy left a disaster along the east coast, Many People lost their lives, houses, vehicles etc. I live in New York and Hurricane sandy made it impossible for me to get gas. I have a 2001 5 series and on last wednesday i tried starting up my car with an empty tank (yellow light was on) with hopes of driving to the corner where the gas line was short. i started the car (choking) but it died. I started it again but it died out immediatly. Finally a friend came by with a 5 gallon gas canister and i was able to put a little less than half a tank of gas inside my car. I tried to start it but now it just cranks but it wont catch on to anything. Any know what the problem or issue is ?

Any help will be appreciated thanks in advance

likely fuel pump. should be replaced anyway along w/ filter and relay

Thanks. Just a suggestion. This site should have sections for each sponsor..just like what Tire Rack has it's own section. The Ask-A-Sponsor forum is just too busy to the eyes.

Definitely sounds like fuel pump. It's exactly what happened to me when my pump failed. I had just filled up, car would start and die, with less and less time running on each startup. Replaced fuel pump, worked like a charm. Do filter at same time if possible, I couldn't but soon after changed the filter.

Usually with the fuel pump the car initially turn on then turns off within a second. Every following time u try and start the car it gives u less and less feedback. Theres a great video on YouTube showing how to replace the fuel pump. Should take 30 min and $500 less than a mechanic would charge u.
