Lose oil?!?!
Hello!
here i am again this time with a doubt about oil!!! My car, 320d 136cv, loses oil. Is this normal? How much? in 11 000 Km, the distance on oil measurement, between max and min, it's on middle!!!. Is this normal? Hum, it has a repro to 150cv, but doen't leave smoke, no oil on floor at morning, and does have not oil marks on engine... I'm sad! What's happening!? Thanks a lot, Best regards |

I don't know what a 320d is but whatever engine you have, it could be anything. you need a full maintenance package done on the car. start there.

You may have a leak which makes this worse, but ~1/2 quart per 11K km isn't bad as far as consumption goes. Even a quart wouldn't really be too bad in that distance.

Your engine likely has at least one dozen oil seals or gaskets that potentially need addressing.

If you open the engine, you need to replace any seals you opened to get there...

WAIT!!!
You are half way down (between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick) after 11,000 kilometers? I'm not sure that you are consuming oil at a rate that even starts to be a problem. How far is that in miles? Seems to me it should be 7,000, give or take. That's not a problem at all. There is absolutely no problem with burning a half-liter of oil over that distance. Indeed it is not normal at all, it is far _better_ than many other people get. Your oil level is fine anywhere between the two marks on the dipstick. You should check the oil before engine start. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean. Put it back in completely and pull it out again. The oil can be any place between the two notches and is considered to be okay. If the oil it at the lower notch, then a full quart/liter is needed to bring the oil to the upper mark. |

Mango is after your car being factory fresh, but most can't really do that.
1/2 qt. loss of oil over 7K miles is fine. Better than most I'd wager...and I'd be right. But, you can do other stuff on the car. Find any leaks you have by cleaning up engine well and look for leaks with good led flashlight with around 100 lumens or so. Then realoem.com for every Part Number you'll ever need. tis.Spaghettidecoder.org will get you bmw tis's. Tell us more about the car and we'll give you other places to spend money and time...like belts, pulleys, cooling system stuff like therm, ET, wp...maybe a few hoses. Mango will be upset you're not rebuilding your engine, but you can appease him by at least replacing some cooling system parts!

Thanks,
ok. Good news .belts are new, change when change oil and all the filters, back 7k miles. water thermostat and egr thermostat also changed. I haven't changed anything else, and don't know when they are changed in past .Sometimes i think to chage water motor and auxiliary water reservatoir. But i see no leaks on water circuit for now... Now about oil leaks i found one vey small... this could be my problem. Send attached one pic to show where is... Is in that hole where a screw is attached... And now i don't know how to close the hole! If screw removed, that is used to attach engine cover, and motor is running, i can see a little oil smoke getting out! Strange thing... i think the old owener used a bigger screw that he can... To fix i think i nedd to open valve cover and close from inside... so that motor suction does not open again the hole.! Maybe this is enought to explain my oil leak... Quote:

I wouldn't just open the valve cover for exporatory surgery just yet. I'm gonna search around and see if I can't find what goes in there for a 320d.

After 11,000km, having the dipstick level come from Max to the middle is perfectly acceptable.
Max to Min difference is about 1quart of oil. |
