TV may be shot, need help

So I went to turn on my TV this morning (46" Samsung LCD I bought in early 2009), and it's not working.

Rather than pulling up a glorious swath of mindless entertainment to keep my occupied while I eat my breakfast, it's sitting there clicking at me.

Yes, clicking. Almost sounds like a ballast trying to fire up, but not quite making it.

I had no intention of replacing this television for at least a year, so I'd really like to be able to make it last.

Anybody have any TV fixing experience? I am quite capable with a soldering iron.

Did you read instruction manual?

instruction manual? Don't have it anymore.

I'm leaning towards some kind of EE solution being needed for this, not an instruction manual solution.

first things first, unplug everything, especially the power cable. once you have done that turn the tv on. i havent forgot that i just said unplug it, it just helps to drain some of the power out of those capacitors.

Next step: Wait. leave it to sit for a few minutes, there's some pretty hefty capacitors in there that'l give you a zapping you wont forget
once youve done that you need to put the tv face down on your duvet or soft thing. Its best not to put it on carpet, even if it is soft As static electricity is never good for semiconductors of any kind, be it the screen or the IC's inside

I unplugged it, and it kept trying to turn on for almost a solid minute. Hefty capacitors is right.

Either that or you woke up in a movie. Question now is whether the movie is a cute-and-freindly-device-bravely-fights-for-life flick or evil-device-possessed-by-the-demons-tries-to-kill-its-humans flick.

My tv is more "Brave Little Toaster" than "Trucks", that's for sure. I've raised it right.

Is there a visible bullet hole? And aren't you in a gun free zone if so i don't think it's been shot

My house has more guns than people and animals. That's the way it should be. This is not the PRMD you have.

I already tried some quik-clot and an Israeli pressure dressing. Didn't help.

so I opened up the TV, and found two blown capacitors right where the diy said they would be. Now to remove and replace. Hopefully this works, as a new TV is not quite in my budget for this week.

Maybe you should move to a nicer neighborhood.

Online guides are great. I fixed my RPTV logic board with a diy guide. It was really hard soldering the leads but it worked perfectly afterwards.

Old TVs always seem to go the same way... Cheap capacitors are always the ones to go when the appliance is not well ventilated.

Pulled the two bad caps (had to get a more powerful soldering iron, as mine wasn't breaking the solder on there), ordered two new ones from digikey.com. I got shipping confirmation within half an hour of ordering.

Fixing tv for five bucks worth of parts > buying new tv.

Your local radio shack may have the capacitors.

That was the cause of the only Samsung LCD I've had die on me. Poor lil guys heads were all puffed up and split open.

Google around a bit. This is a common problem and people have put together kits with exactly the pieces that need replaced in particular models. In my case, it wasn't worth the effort to save an old monitor worth $75.

Replace the capacitors with a 2jz
