I'm thinking about doing this on Jan 1. I have a low tolerance for cold weather though... should be fun.
anyone done this in the past?

My friends that went to school at Appalachian used to do it. They were very drunk. I've been scuba diving in water that was ~50 with air temperatures in the low 40s and I survived. You'll be fine.

Never have seen the appeal in doing this. And there have been people that have been so shocked by the cold that they went into cardiac arrest. Will not be doing this...I stick to warm water and laugh at the rest of the others while I sit and drink my beer in warmth

I did it in Vancouver a few years ago. It was a blast. People in costumes, hockey players in full pads, including their skates, guys in thongs / Borat swimsuits, girls in tiny bikinis, etc. Temps were in the high 20's, and there was snow on the ground. A few tips:
- You'll get the coldest while you wait to go in. Be sure to at least wear flip-flops to keep your bare feet off the beach. We stood on towels. Also, bring a warm hat. - Obviously clothes/blankets to warm you up afterwards. - You usually have to swim out to a buoy or something to really count, although plenty of people will literally only put their toes in the water. I full-on swam it. You have so much adrenaline, it's not hard (you swim maybe 50 yards). |

I've done it a handful of times. Once you get in, you will immediately regret the decision to do it. But, because of human nature, I keep doing it again anyway.
Here in MN you don't run in off of a beach, you jump off a dock and into the lake. Then you have to climb out of the water and they have a place for you to towel off as much cold water and get into a hot tub. Can't say it's a good idea but worth it to cross off the bucket list. |

My parents did an Antarctic cruise last year and the boat did a stop where people could jump in. I think the water was like 28 or somewhere around there. The ship's doc was standing by, lol.

I don't remember, it was 4 or 5 years ago. I do remember I had a pair of farmer johns, a jacket, gloves, and a hood and I still had the same headache you get from ice cream the entire time I was down. The dive master with us was an ex navy seal. He used to teach a BYU and said their entry into the water at the same time of year was walking out on the lake and falling through the ice.
