Thanks for the guide! What a b***h of a job getting the upper screw out on RHD as steering column in way! Finally went and bought hex key set - anyone having fun trying to get at the screw should use one of these, it fits in fairly easily. The T20 one is only about 4 inches long which is perfect.

I got round to this job on the weekend. Took nearly two hours including a trip to the hardware store (15 min drive each way) mid way through.

I stupidly started with the LHD DIY a few weeks ago and gave up out of frustration after finding out that the FSR is on the opposite side for RHD vehicles. Followed the instructions in here and managed to complete the job properly.

The screw that everyone talks about is a b!tch to remove. I've attached a pic that I could get by shoving my phone into the small gap. It was done up tightly so I couldn't get enough leverage from the allen key to move it.

In the end, I used a torx t-20 mounted on a narrow extension, attached to a bendy elbow with a second extension and then to my socket wrench. Happy to rebuild the tool if you guys want to see pictures of it.

When putting it back, I only attached the b!tch piece with the easy access screw and left the other undone. I figured that with one screw and the slide mount that it was more than stable enough.

I've just followed these instructions and had the job done within an hour, credit to the pictures ! Was expecting a nightmare though wasn't as bad as I first thought. Hardest part was sliding the FSR clip so I could release it, like most I haven't replaced the top screw on the stepper motor

Excellent DIY guide. Tackled the FSU this morning, took about 3hrs all in. Stupidly started working from the passenger foot well of a RHD, so that easily added an hour for re-assembly...

What a great guide thank you.
Took me about 45 mins (limited know how).
I used a long t20 with a drill type extension/holder on a long driver.
It came out past the steering column and saved me butchering a driver
Hope my improv may save someone else a few hours of swearing

I never would have found that hidden screw! I don't know how anyone could do it lying on the sill. I put the front seat on its flattest setting and lay across it with my feet on the back seat, with it also in the flat position. When I was at the hardware store/diy shop (actually it was a baumarkt) I bought a T-handled 100mm driver and it was an almost perfect fit. I also tried with a socket extension but it was too flexible and too wide. I also bought an LED lamp with a hook which also proved useful. I've been putting this job off for years!!

Big thanks to Docremus for the write-up. Have been procrastinating about fixing it. Our unseasonal wet weather forced me as the car was fogging up!

This repair would have been impossible without the invention of both 1) the internet and 2) the video camera with light on the iPhone! In the end it wasn't as bad as I feared. My only addition to this thread - remember to disconnect the battery! Duh I know! Had a brief short when driver touch something near the steering column. Not sure what but it seems I got away with it and everything still works. Very lucky not to have a major face palm moment!

Today I replaced the final stage resistor on my car which is a right hand drive. Oh boy, the German engineers really screwed up with this one, excuse the pun.

That one screw took me around 2 hours to get to, so much swearing lol... in the end i didnt even bother with a torch, and was just feeling where the screw is, eventually found it and removed it.

I didnt bother putting the screw back as the stepper motor seems to hold just fine on the clip and the other screw holding it in place

Repairing the fsr

Removed the resin and found out that some soldering points were dry,
after the fix the unit worked as before...

A few more tips: 1. REMOVE THE SEAT

1. REMOVE THE SEAT, its only 2 bolts, 2 nuts and 1 wiring connector, comes out in 5 minutes, your back will thank you.
WARNING: DONT SWITCH IGNITION ON WITH SEAT UNPLUGGED as that will cauae a fault ti be logged and red seatbelt/airbag warning light continuously illuminated on dash, requiring a reset by computer diagnostics.
(You don't need to remove seatbelt lower mount, just leave it attached an put seat outside of car with belt still attached). tip, remove rear runner bolts first, then slide seat back and remove front nuts, then slide seat forward a bit before removing, so that runners arn't sticking out the front, as I nearly scratched my door trip by removing seat without doing that.

2. The Clutch rubber stop does NOT just pull out ( I snapped mine) its screwed in, that's why there's a crosshead screw shape in the centre !

3. Use a mobile phone camcorder to see the rear screw, better than a mirror as it includes a light

Took me 2 hours, including removing and refitting the seat.

Cool Tips

The screw that everyone bitches about is really not that hard to remove or replace. Here is a tip; use a screwdriver type Torx tool and not one on a ratchet. This gives plenty of room to remove and replace. Also, this screw is a bit far back and can be hard to keep on the tip of the torx as you replace it. To solve this problem, simply take two small magnets and put them on the side of your torx screw driver. Engage the torx screw onto the driver and replace without any dropsies. For small magnets, I just love the powerful ones that come with every Sonicare toothbrush head. Simply break them off with a pair of pliers and save them up whenever you dispose of a sonicare head. They come in handy for so many things and they are very very useful and powerful.

After reading this original post and some others online, I replaced my one a couple days ago and all in all took me approx 2 hrs (including quick trip to halfords to grab a shorter torx screwdriver.
The top torx screw was indeed an utter arse to locate and I ended up using the video function on my phone with the flash light to view the location of the screw via the screen and then I could easily slot the screwdriver into position.

Job now done, heater blowing fine and battery not getting drained.......happy days

My 110mm screw bit extention and mini rachet made it soooo easy to get the 'ball-ache' screw out (it was still a c**t getting it back in though).
Do yourselves a MAHOOOOSIVE favour and buy/borrow/make/steal one from somewhere.
