CJ, update: I test drove the 135i 6MT at BMW of Murray with less miles than mine with the two tone lemon/black interior and honestly my predispositions of wanting a manual are gone. it was nice for sure (i am very experienced with manual cars, family has a mt mini/porsche etc, ) but the car really wasn't that much more fun with the manual. not as much as i expected at least. I was happy to get back into mine. Just feels more luxurious and well put together with the step and paddle shifters. Honestly mine feels a bit faster too. I would still swap to manual if i had the choice and it was free or saved me money, it is just more marginal than i had thought. Still fun but not a huge deal. We are entering an era where the automatics simply shift faster and better than manuals. in summary i would say its a toss up

Do you know if there are any major differences between a 2008 and a 2009? Is one year more preferable than the other?

ya 2009 marked the transition from the n54 twin turbo to the n55 twinscroll single turbo. Other than that i think only rearview mirrors, a couple other minor things.. (Msport package) comes with the black headliner, etc.

Not true. For sure every 2011 had the N55 and apparently so did some 2010s, but they're rare. Early 2010 production dates (February or March) would be the first months that could have the N55, and soon after that they switched to the 2011 model year where they all had the N55.

The N54 was definitely used in 2009.

More than just a few minor things. IDrive changed in '09 (..for all BMW's), and it was a significant upgrade. 2011 marked the introduction of the ComBox, enabling text messages, emails, etc. to be read via IDrive.

And the 7 speed DCT option. Can't forget that one. Puts his auto to shame.

In '12 they got upgraded LED tail lights, new headlights and some other bits too.

And I'm pretty sure DCT came with the N55, but not 100% positive.

I finally test drove one and they are an absolute blast to drive. It was an 09 135i, manual with the sport package.

How did the handling compare to an e46?

They were comparable, I think. I typically didn't push my 323ci very hard because, well, it was a 323ci, lol. The 1er is definitely faster (duh) and as with any BMW, the handling was fantastic.

I think the 1-Series handles better. My g/f has a 128i with the M-Pkg. I spend about as much time in a 1-series as I do my M3.

I've driven a few through detailing and test drives.

The 1 series is more flickable and a touch more nimble, which makes sense because of the shorter wheelbase compared to the E46.

Compared to a fresh E46 suspension the E82s are slightly twitchier and have understeer more (stock), though both understeer at the limit (stock).

there was a 6 month overlap, so for a very short period of time you can have an n54 with dct.

it is noticeably different. the steering on the 1 is very very stiff. I love that part of the car. the e46 feels a tiny bit more "planted" stock due to a slightly longer wheelbase and wider car i think, but overall i prefer the 1. def a win win area here though. The 1 is a lot "smoother" but it should not be confused as to be less sporty. it is basically the new e46 imo.

given the choice i would agree, i went from the e46 m to the 135. it is faster too.

def on the understeer with the stock suspension. i have heard coilovers can do wonders for the car.

To reduce the understeer, you should go with a square setup and then dial in the camber in the front. You can get some adjustable camber plates, but there are other methods if you don't want to go that route

Yup, square tires and camber. And then M or Hotchkis sway bars. And then M3 toe links, wishbones, control arms, upper control arms, lower camber links, etc. etc.

Then cry $2-$5k later when you're broke.

But hey, it won't understeer anymore!

I think the wishbones are the only M3 components that will reduce camber (~-.75 degrees). You can remove the strut alignment pins for another -.5 degrees (or so). That's about the cheapest way to dial in the camber for the E82/E9X
