Manual or automatic transmission?

If manual, you need a clutch. If automatic, you need a torque converter, or a transmission repair. Odds are that you will not be fixing this, so you need to take the car to a mechanic.

Autos don't have a pressure plate, so he probably didn't read.

Cleaning the reverse solenoid is a gamble, but it might buy you a few days, weeks, or months. You're going to need a new (or used) transmission sooner or later. I'm pretty sure individual replacement parts aren't available, so consider that a "rebuilt" unit may be false economy.
