Some people can't frame for sh1t
Reading this will teach you everything an intro photography class would teach you. Framing is something that comes with time and experience. Understanding how to get a proper exposure is just as important, if not more so, as framing the subject.

Absolutely. Especially if you are just starting out. Make sure that the camera is in good cosmetic and functional shape and has low mileage on it (low shutter count).

I'm going to stop by Best Buy tomorrow to get my hands on a few of the cameras. The D5100 looks like the winner so far.

Please support your local businesses before Best Buy. The people at a legitimate photo store will be able to truly help you whereas the people at Best Buy are looking for a commission. Also, BB is probably going to be swamped.

I agree, and especially seeing that he is in NYC and could head over to B&H Photo, most of us only wish we could walk into B&H!

I know I know! It's just that it's close to me to do hands on, not to buy.

And you got a good deal on it right? like $500?

btw, if you take the tip of a knife to that silver ring and just pierce it, it will come right off. I have the same lens and I think it looks better without the bling.

Raw, yes. I have to set the camera to shoot in raw.

Just played a bit with the effects and manual setting on the camera. Battery is charging as we speak. Is there any reason to have that incandescent light to turn on while focusing or does it turn off in brighter environments?

It's kinda nice sometimes. You look like a noob, but I leave it on.

I was going to bring up raw and lightroom, then I didn't.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TURN THE AUTOFOCUS BEEP OFF. Unless you're shooting with your remote... because in that case it's kinda handy.

That's a good starter telephoto lens. better than not having a telephoto at all.

I absolutely love my 35 1.8 AF-S. A 50 is too long on a DX camera to be really useful imo

I have the D5000 with a stock lens and 55-200mm AF-S VR, and WAYYYY underqualified to use it haha.

Have fun! Look forward to seeing some shots in the photo thread
