I sold the E30 last weekend and the ZHP is leaving tomorrow
So, that leaves me the touring and the soon to be choosen and acquired X5 M

Not a good idea for several reasons: when the A/C is off, there is little load applied to the engine, performance gain(s) by removing the belt would be very slight. However the biggest reasons for not removing the belt are: when you turn the defroster on, the A/C runs to help pull the moisture out of the inside air AND by running the A/C every time the defroster is used, helps to keep the A/C system charged longer, i. e. keeps the seals lubricated and refrigerant from leaking. Hell, you can run the A/C all year round and set the temperature for what you want and still toast yourself out, and at the same time, reduce the moisture within the car's interior.
