Yes, I was told FMJ only and to stay away from brass, reloads, or anything cheap like wolf.

Brass cased ammunition is the most popular around, and it is what the military uses. It will be harder for you to find 5.56 or .223 ammuntion that is not brass cased.

Stay away from reloads if you don't know the person that is reloading them.

Wolf is fine if your AR will shoot it, it's just dirty.

Fmj refers to the bullet/projectile. Theres also jacketed hollow point (jhp), tmj, lrn, etc. Brass refers to the case. The bullet is still lead. Brass ammo tends to be higher quality. Reloads are questionable because people take once-used brass, fill it with powder then press a projectile onto the top. Steel refers to the steel case, typically Russian made. It's cheap, but can be dirty and it smells like cat piss. Hope this helps a little.

The whole "can I shoot steel cases ammo?" deserves a whole different thread. to answer your question in brief - yes, your ar15 can shoot steel fine. But the long answer is really yes and no. I wouldn't want a rifle that couldn't shoot steel cases ammo reliably.

Do those "pre-order" deals on ammo usually work out okay? I've seen you guys post a few hiccups, and I'm always hesitant about ordering anything that's not in stock.

The pre order deals usually work out, just a matter of when ha. If your in a rush I wouldn't recommend it. I have 2000rounds of 5.56 backordered that probably wont ship until jan but one is at $310 and one is at about $280. So IMO they are worth waiting for and I have other ammo to get me through. It's just a crap shoot of when your going to get it. As long as you order it from a reputable place you will be GTG IMO(Brownells, Sportsmanguide, Cabelas)

Hi guys. Looking to pick up my first gun. Big 5 has a mossberg 500 Silver w two barrels for 299 for BF. I was trying to look up what the silver was but couldnt find any concrete info on it, just forum threads saying "I think it has cheaper parts." anybody here know about the "silver" model? I like that it has 2 barrels so I can keep the short one on for home defense and the longer one for shooting clays. It's this or an 870 express.

IMO I like the 870 express. The mossburg 500 I handled felt like it was going to shake apart.
