go to your range and try everything in the caliber you are interested in purchasing. You won't know what you like until you handle different brands of pistols.

Me too. Been saying it for years.
I actually wish they had a single stack 9mm with thumb safety.
They do have the 36 though.

S&W Shield...here I come.

As much as I'd like a Glock, here are a few other choices which might fit your needs. Glock is pretty slow moving, but I suspect they will eventually make a single stack subcompact available.

Kahr CM9/PM9 (bought a CM9, love it)
S&W Shield
Beretta Nano
SA XDS (.45, I'm sure at some point it will come in a 9mm offering)

I went to a gunstore today to fondle with the grips of some of the polymer guns and I have to say now that I'm really digging the XDM9 3.8.I like the it fits in my hand which is very small. But it has a smaller mags/rounds count compared to the glock which also fits nicely in my hand except that its ugly.

Very reliable.

Holds its value very well.

Down the road you will know more about what you wish you had (if anything.)
That wasn't my first handgun... it was my second.

Should have been my first for all of those reasons ^

Nope, Glocks don't win many beauty contests, except the ones judged by those who hold a special place in their hearts for them.

I like the way the Glock grip feels when you get a nice high grip on it. If you hold it any other way than the 'proper' way to hold a handgun then it won't feel right IMO.

Great video on the basics:
