712-ZHP 330i Rack & Pinion

9/01+ 330 unit that just happens to be installed in 330 ZHPs.

Wait a minute. You already have this rack in your car. Why did you buy the same rack again??

I have a 330i m-tech 1. Same as your car I believe. I bought the 712 rack as an upgrade and well since the rack I have has incredible over-boosted steering going on. My tie-rods are gone to heck too. Should drive awesome as soon as I'm done Mango. I understand they have better internals 'torsion bar' and what not, but the same turn ratio. So here we go...Have you upgraded?

lol you just purchased the same rack that you already have. no i did not "upgrade." my car as well as every other 9/01+ 330 has the 712 rack. All 330s after 9/01 regardless if ZHP or NOT got the 712 rack. everything in your car steering related is identical to the latest 2005 ZHP.

I stayed up all night reading this other tread, I believe by peytonracer regarding the rack & pinion we have, and unfortunately only the zhp's had that rack. Correct if I'm wrong. I'm going to see if I can find that thread.

Hahaha dang it, I searched for it again and there was Mango rapping the zhp boys, lololol. Doh ! Oh well, I'm still excited that I get to replace it and re-establish the "bmw" in my car. I just can't wait to drive the car hard.

Since you bought the rack already, doesn't hurt to put it in especially since it comes with new inner tie rods (did you purchase new inner tie rods as well?. Sell the old rack, I'm sure someone will pick it up. Make sure you take pics of the rack you take out (particularly the tag) and post it up.

I didn't purchase the inner tie-rods since they supply them. I need to buy the outer tie-rods though.

What's the difference between the rack in cars like my '00 323i and the ZHP unit?

Right. That's what I said. I was just making sure you don't buy extras. So which outer tierods did you buy and for how much?

The correct term is 9/01+ 330 rack.

The difference, as Rich (Rack doctor) showed, is ratio and internals. Basically heavier and faster. I'm not sure what the 323 has but I'm sure it's not as sporty (probably the 678 purple tag rack)

I just bought the rack, I still need to buy the outers. What brand did you go for ?

Btw, I know this is really off topic so I apologize, but do any of you know or have billet oil filter caps ? My caps warped and it's on it's way.

Haha thanks for correcting me, Sir Mango! The reason I'm asking is because my steering currently has an annoying amount of on-center play. I've got tie rod assemblies waiting to be installed and a steering guibo on the way. If that didn't cure it I was going to replace the entire rack, and I was thinking the 9/01+ 330i rack would be the way to go.
