I recently ran a water hose in my 325ci till only water drained out from underneath the et. I then added bmw coolant in there. The dealership told me 2 gallons would be fine. The idiot didnt have a clue, but 1 gallon was perfectly fine, i had to mix it with a gallon of distilled water. I had to reflush my car. Im lucky i didnt break anything. But for a while i thought i did because i was no longer getting heat. I just kept turning off the car, refilling with coolant until i got heat. I was so relieved. I hope your problem may be fixed as easily as mine, because thats all it took for me.

Where is the surprise here. Our coolant capacity is just over two gallons. If you are using your dealer for your source of tech information, that means you're not spending the time here to learn from all this DIY information that so many have carefully memorialized here. Your anxiety regarding no heat could have also been avoided.
When you flushed, did you have the block and radiator drains both open?

You recommend using prestone and tap water, you run (self-admittedly) the wrong expansion tank cap on your cooling system, and that's just off the top of my head. what other things do you do? oh yeah you talked sh!t about fuel pump PM then it ended up stranding you the morning of your job interview.

Yes I recommend using Prestone, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Its a good coolant and does its job very well.Who do you think makes BMW labeled coolant?

Again, you obviously know nothing about cars and whats what, Im not even going to argue the tap water statement . Tap water is no just fine its absolutely great, go ask anyone whos ever worked on cars and has some experience .Not someone who spends all his life on an internet forum listening to self proclaimed mechanics . Sure you can use distilled water, but tap water is just as good and in some cases even better depending on where you live.

I dont have the worng cap. I have a Genuine BMW ET 1.4 bar cap. It suits my needs perfectly based on my car.And whenever I recommend it to anyone I warn them of the side effects and the benefits of it. You got no point here.

I never said anything bad about a fuel pump,its the heart of the car) I kept on putting the replacement off and I paid a price for it. You got your things messed up here. Other things that I do are illegal and BMW would torture me to death if they found out...

OMG!! Engineers spend countless hours figuring out how to make things work, and last longer, and some idjit comes along and says shite like this!

I used to work in a power plant, and putting tap water (I don't care where you live) into a boiler serving a 100 megawatt turbine would result in shutting down that turbine within a matter of hours.

Granted, these boilers produce 1000F steam, which is much higher (hopefully) than your BMW engine will see, but you still don't want to put tap water in it.

I guess these forums serve a purpose in exposing the "backyard" mechanics' techniques for what they are. Might as well save water and use urine with your Prestone.

I don't know of anyone who will agree with this post. I'm afraid you're all alone on this one. You want to use "distilled" or "ionized" water as it's 100% H20, and does not contain any minerals, additives, or impurities that will adversely affect the cooling system and engine cooling passages.

You said it best, my friend. I call these "backyard mechanics" barnyard boys. You say potato, I say tomato

I have a challenge for the distilled water faithful--find me one, just one, single repair shop or dealership who uses distilled water. It's much more "professional mechanic" than backyard.

Modern coolant is good enough that it doesn't make much difference. Now...distilled is better, and the notion that tap water is better is absurd. As is the idea that a 1.4 bar rad cap is an upgrade in any way, but hopefully we won't go there again.

It's not "better," that's incorrect, but it won't harm your system if you flush it every two years. The coolant is designed to take high mineral tap water. Distilled is ideal, but you can use tap water. Dunno why you would seeing how cheap distilled is, but you can.

They're not exactly my standard for excellence! Weak defense to quote their example. That's why I take pains to DIY as much as possible.
How about instead I find you twenty pro shops that have left loose bolts, cables out of their brackets, washers missing under bolts, etc.
50% of the time when I get my car back, I have to check and redo things that they've overlooked. Oh me of little faith!

Happens everywhere. Guy who cleaned my 125hp boiler last week didn't tighten all the bolts around the breech gasket when he bolted things back together.
Had to go around with my socket wrench after he left.

This....100%

I am inclined to agree, but every shop does it, not just the bad ones. DIYers make mistakes too, distilled or otherwise. Professionals have the experience to know it doesn't actually make much difference.

As others said, bad example. It's not in a shop's best interest to do things with a passion or to ensure your car doesn't have deposit build up internally. What owner is going to go "HAY U USED TAP WATER IN MY ENGINE! UR FAULT MY RADIATOR CLOG!"
