Would you ever buy an Audi after owning a BMW?

At least these are pretty easily servicable minus the subfram bushings. For an Audi you have to take the whole car apart to get to anything in the engine.

Don't think I could ever make the jump, I got alot of friends with Audi's and a buddy who works at the Audi dealership, I seem to hear from all of them how many problems there are. My buddy had an old S4 and he always joked how there was always a dash light on, for the one day the dash was clear of lights he took a picture and sent it to all of us as a joke as he's never seen the car with a clear dash. Audi's are nice cars no doubt, I would love a RS4 but I can be honest and say I don't see one in my future.

That is nothing at all like the truth. I own an audi, and it is not as bad as the interwebs make it out to be.

Sure, some things are hard, but not everything. But the same goes to BMW, especially the inherent faults we have on just the E46 alnoe...

VANOS failure

That is all I have to name. They are so incredibly bad that you can lose the entire car, and in both cases, BMW says they did nothing wrong.

I get the idea of pride for your ride, but siding with BMW because you own one, and your buddies friends brothers son got an Audi and hated it is a pretty lame thing to base your understanding off of.

I like the audi we have for the most part. I wish it was a little newer for the look, but it is still a nice car. I love that the engine has been bullet proof. I think the interior is a little dated, but everything still works great. The only issues I have had with the car were either warranty issues that were fixed, or little issues I either created or are so small it doesn't even matter.

And our car was a lease turn in, purchased as a CPO, and has served as our families main car for 4 years. Never have we been left stranded with the exception of a double tire blow out which could have happened to anyone. I replaced a battery after 3 years, and I need to replace the Kombi Valves to clear a code, but other than that, I have never had an issue with this car that would turn me away from the brand.

Car and Driver just named the 3-Series in their 10 Best for the 22nd year in a row. Audi made the list as well with the A6/S6/A7/S7.



Mercedes did not make the list this year.

Their design logic is astrocious. The car is surprisingly bullet-proof given that it's continually operating in a partially malfunctioning state, but there is always a problem somewhere, and that problem is near impossible to fix.

Let's go with that .

I should bring up the fact that packaging (parts placement within the vehicle) is one of the more challenging design stages there is for an automobile. You have to take all these systems that were designed in labs or in racing cars and then fit them all into a vehicle that will be on the road for 20 years. You have so much stuff going everywhere. Some of it is robust and can be put just about anywhere, but other things have to be kept clear of heat or moisture or both. Have you ever noticed the preposterous shapes in which the windshield washer fluid bottle is molded for most cars? That's just because it is a low priority item and they stick it where ever they can fit a couple quarts of liquid. Something like the electrical box, master cylinder, or intake will get priority placement. Other things will be shaped to fit around them. It's difficult and time consuming, so we gotta cut auto designers a little slack when we comment on the repairability of a vehicle. The first problem is getting everything to fit. The second problem is making things accessable with a minimum of interference from other parts. They'll bury durable, low maintenance items behind more failure prone devices.

Never knew this many problems plagued Audis. Was considering one.

Really? Just your alternator? First, it is a 2.7T S4, notorious for being the most tightly packed engine bay in the world.

Secondly, why did you remove your drivers side intercooler, and timing cover, boost hoses and have an Optima blue top plugged in? All for the alternator? The smart guy would have dropped the front subframe while supporting the engine, and removed the alternator and belts, and installation is the reversal of removal. But, it might be different with the S4.

Is your alignment for camber dependent on the subframe position like the A6?

M3 competes with RS5, not the S5. Unless something has changed, the RS5 still retains a V8 whereas the S5 has gone to SC'd V6, which still makes it plenty competitive with the 335's.

This man speaks the truth. The S4 makes 333hp, which is competitive with the 335i.

Can you answer me on the VW Polo, or the deisel audi engines not making these shores? No? Why, I thought you were working "in the industry"...

I'm probably late on this, but the bottleneck of Mercedes is their transmissions. Particularly the manual...it needs to be extremely needed up to hold power, and for some of those cars that weigh like 4000+? Lbs...that's a lot. Sexy engines though!
