Review of the Tesla S

Kinda want.

looks like a cheap Hyundai - over priced and over rated imo

My father was going to get one. I convinced him to get an E92 M3. No regrets.

Motor trend named the tesla s car of the year, it's pretty awesome looking in person

I like the look of it, and it's also pretty damn fast.

Not bad for an electric car.

-gets beaten by a 40k 5.0 mustang
-BMW reliability (wouldn't want to own one out of warranty)
-f30 m3/4 is around the corner

Let me preface this by pointing out that I am opposed to the E90's. E46 FTW.

-He bought it because it's a sports car. DCT and Competition package.
-If you think it gets "beaten" by a Mustang, then you simply are misinformed and grasping at info for the argument.
-It'll be new.
-The M4 will be huge and heavy(er) and turbo charged.

-E92 is a $75k car, Tesla is a $100k car. The Tesla would have been $85k for similar performance. He drives 6k a year. Gas cost isn't a big issue.

He really wanted a more practical and much faster replacement for his 2003 Boxster S. He has to have automatic (knee problems) which makes a E46 M3 out of the question.

Yes, objectively a mustang gt is as fast as an e92 m3.

I have friends that work for Tesla and I picked their brains for everything I could learn about the car at a technical level. They are trying really hard to be competitive and make the best quality car possible, no exceptions. There are a few funny things they had to do as a result of the development process and engineering "fixes" after the fact. Safety is never compromised (specifically the batteries catching fire), but I could definitely see them improving it a lot in the following years.

Still, the batteries need improvement. With the DOE's investment in battery technology over the next 5 years (http://www.extremetech.com/computing...can-it-be-done) I could see this car finally being realistic. Right now, it's still too expensive and limited. They also went overboard with ridiculous things like those retracting door handles, and they could easily make this car more affordable by just using simpler, cheaper accessories and keeping the powertrain the same.

I sold my car to a Tesla engineer. He said last week was the first time since inception that a car came off the production line without any quality issues.

how many yrs did it take ford to catch up and out preform a 4-5yr old e92M3? But I do agree with not waiting out for the newer m3/4 or the new cayman S!!!

A Porsche is out of the question. They haven't made a quality car for less than $150,000 since 1996.

Having a slightly faster time at one track hardly makes it a better buy.
