I just picked up a cd53 with date code of jan07. The sticker says it is a 215 but when I peel it back it says 214? From what I read above they didn't remanufacture the 214s to be 215s? If that is the case than what do i have here? Any ideas if this will play mp3?

Yes it will play MP3 with no problem.
