Just because the value depreciated doesn't mean it's not an investment. Huge companies make capital invenstments all the time that depreciate. In fact they have different methods of depreciating their investments depending on tax effects et cetera.

My point was that people have a very narrow if not totally incorrect understanding/view of what an investment is if they say a car isn't an investment. A car is absolutely, positively an investment. There's no disputing that fact. Whether it's a good or bad investment has nothing to do with the fact that it IS an investment and completely depends on how you define what a "good" or "bad" investment is.

My car probably will end the year being worth roughly what I paid for it. Was it a good investment? Some would say no because I didn't make a profit on it but that's ludicrous. I say it's a great investment because I'm not paying a car payment over that entire year where I otherwise would have. I sold a 2005 Accord EX V6 for 11,500 and bought an e46 for $3300. I took the money and did something else with it, but got a car that I enjoy driving MORE than the one that cost three times as much.

I'd say that's a good investment.
That would be true if you consider your car to be a capital good.

The 96 in your name made me think of 1996. Also, you're posting in the high school thread.

This thread is lame, they are older used cars. Get over having a badge and thinking you are superior. If you think that the E46 is rare and a fast speed racer....never mind

You're obsessed with it because it's your first car, you'll get over it soon, don't worry

new BMW's were pretty popular in my neighborhood at 16. My dad got me a 1966 Mustang GT and fully restored it for my first car. Had a/c, pony interior, all the goodies at the time. http://www.30moons.com/cars66GT.php

The internet and all of its users bring in quite a bit of money. People like to click things that popup

It's not really that hard....I worked 2 official jobs over the summer to buy my car and during the school year I work at 1 job and do odd jobs for neighbors for extra cash.

Seriously, from someone who once did the same thing... Don't. You're in high school, enjoy it! Go out and have fun with friends, get lots of 18 year old booty, and travel!

(Please pardon my auto-correct)

When I was in high school I had a 24 speed mountain bike.

How times have changed. Make sure you study hard and do all your homework!

I totally understand what you mean! I'm pretty good with planing so, I find ways to organize my time, and luckily my manager is pretty laid back and lets me make my own schedule so work doesn't really interfere with my personal life

I had the same exact car at 16, a 66 GT red with black vinyl top, only I had the factory rally wheels. Bought it for $2000.00 and sold it seven years later for $6000.00. If it was raining or snowing, my car wouldn't track straight for anything and would continuously spin out.

I say to the high schoolers - don't take any guff from those old college guys. I have loved almost all my cars. My second car was an black '83 GTI which got totaled - I cried at the junkyard when I went to get my stuff out of it and still miss it 24 years later. MY BMW is bone stock but I love her. German cars rock.

It's true for anything, that was just an example.

An invenstment is an investment whether it's positive or negative on cash flow. Benefits of an investment aren't just financial.
