Can he somehow convert it to a regular Steptronic, which will have a much longer life if properly maintained.

I heard Texas cars have two reverse gears, one for going up the hillbilly and another for backing out of their sister's garage.

Smg is fine. People, stop being scared. Yeah the pump is expensive but a rare failure.
It's a good gearbox. Sounds like a great find.
