Spring issues?

So i am at american tire for an alignment. And the mechanic tells me one of my h&r springs slipped through that metal piece that holds the spring down on the front strut on the driver side..the passenger side he moved back into place and its all good.

He says he thinks the spring somehow expanded to get like that where its not being held down by that top mount. Is this at all possible? How can a piece of steel expand?
The spring apparently is the issue.

Pics?

Unless they were installed incorrectly I don't see this happening.

Well, they sort of explained it to me. They said its fine now and good to go.

Apparently, since the spring is shorter (h&r race springs), the spring moved out of place from whenever I lift the car up by the jack points. The spring decompresses as I move it up in the air, so when I lowered the jack it must not have grooved into the top hat and I wouldnt even notice it happening.

I was told to jack up by the control arms from the spring ever from it moving out of place. A piece of metal cannot expand without being heated up. Its obvious why the guy at the front desk is working at this pepboy looking shop instead of a dealership. The mechanic knew his stuff though.
