Would you send your kids to private school?

Had a great convo with some people last night, wanted to take the pulse here.

I grew up in the richest county in Tx, so we had great Public schools. I think that for most people, if you live in a good safe area, and you have good public schools, why WOULDN'T you send your kids to public schools?

GF went to private school as Ohio had horrible public schools, I get that reasoning.

But Unless you want your kids to be taught some religious Dogma, sports reasons, and you live in an area with good schools..why wouldn't you just use the public system?

Without question. There is a lot more to be learned in school than you can find in textbooks and I believe that there is more liberty to provide those values (religion, discipline, etc) in private school. I'm not saying ALL private schools are better than ALL public schools (or even a majority) but rather that there is a greater ABILITY within private school to provide those. In public schools, religion (to me this is tied to ethics) and discipline are largely left out... Seeing kids get scolded in ways you could NEVER get away with in public school instilled fear which lead to respect.. a respect which has earned the same in kind from adults as I was growing up and a mutual respect now as a grown up.

Some view these as responsibilities of the parents.. and I agree. Ethics and discipline SHOULD be passed down by parents but that doesn't mean that they can't be reinforced 8 hours a day at school.

Just my two cents and anyone attacking me for this opinion is a d1ck

I send my step daughter to private because father in law wants her in private, but I think a decent public school in dfw area can get her into whatever school she would want and I could save some money on school taxes.

Bingo. I grew up in Rockwall. Rockwall & Plano schools I think are great examples of solid public schools in great area's.


I went to a really good public school, I just don't know if I want to pay to send my kid to private school..I don't think the ROI would be there if we lived in a nice area with good schools anyways.

From my chair, the only reason kids would go to private is if there was some sports or religious reason for it. I don't really by the "you'll make connections" argument for HS students, just like I don't buy it when Frats use it.

I moved to an area with good public schools so I wouldn't have to waste tens of thousands on the same education they can get from a private school.

I would if that was my only choice. Education is very important to me. My wife went to a horrible school system. Elementary: Anderson Ranked 372nd out of 414 Cities. So when we bought our house I said it must not be in that school district. We paid a lot more of course. But it was worth it. My kids go to : Elementary: Lapel Ranked 31st out of 414 Cities.

Let me guess... you went to a private school.

Never. I was in both and will say with 100% confidence that there are VASTLY more life lessons learned when you're not in a bubble of the same socioeconomic people as yourself. I learned just as much on the bus rides to and from school as I did in my classes. Sure, a private school might have better facilities, but more often than not the attitude that comes out of private schools is atrocious. I know too many people that went to a private school or boarding school prior to college and came into it with the attitude that they were better than everyone else. As one guy in my fraternity put it "It all comes out in the wash". None of that sh!t matters in the end and there's a good chance you'll come off as some elitist douche rather than a humble yet capable individual.

I live in an excellent school district, but I'm still likely sending my kids to private schools. Why? Public schools have to deal with a lot of state and district level nonsense which private schools do not. Avoiding the administrative and misguided curriculum nonsense allows the teachers at a private school to focus on teaching, not administrative BS that takes up the majority public school teachers' time.

My wife is a teacher in the district and it is an issue that is big enough that the teachers are pushing back to the administration up to the superintendent. Keep in mind these are "excellent" schools too, at least by state scoring standards. Just think if they had time to focus on actual teaching rather than simply trying to get the kids to score well on state tests.

JMHO.

I'm sure my kids will get a fine education either way, but I'd prefer to give them a leg up from the beginning.

curious where you can find rankings. I'd love to see what my elementary school is now and what it was.

We've had our kids in the public schools because (like a bunch of other people who have posted) we live in an area with excellent public schools. I think Chase has a valid argument, but for us the religious/ethical stuff gets taught at home and church. We are fortunate that neither of our kids has ever had to be disciplined by a teacher or administrator, but I can see how that might be an issue if you had a kid that was rebellious or a dickhead.

It depends on where you live. Some public districts are awful, some are excellent.

Relevant questions:
- Is your kid smart enough to get into a Charter?
- Would you get financial aid for said private school?
- What do you want your kid learning? Strictly things found in textbooks? Or do you want them taught a certain mindset or mentality? That's what private schools offer.

I am friends with a few who went to private schools and are dumb as rocks. All they do is talks sh1t about public schools. I went to a bad public school with a 30% graduation rate and a few of my friends from the public schools are already millionaires. I am not doing so bad myself. I live in an affluent commitunity with great public schools but I've contemplate sending my boy to an inner city public school. It builds character, there are so much bad options, I want to see which one he takes. It'll help him deal with bullying, etc. It's up to the individual imo.

There are non religious private schools.

As a student of both private and public I can tell you from experience that there are pros and cons to both.

I went to private school (catholic) for 4 years. There was no crime, no fights, no guns, no gangs, etc. There were other issues though like drugs, snobs, etc.

I loved my public high school and hated my private high school.

I loved my private middle school and hated my public middle school.

Summary: it completely depends on the situation.

The houses near the top rated schools cost 2-3 times as much as the ones near low rated schools. While there are a number of other reasons to buy in the better neighborhood, a lot of what you're paying extra for is a good local elementary.

What if he gets killed? or even injured? Same risk as a suburb private school?
