Well in the beginning somebody mentioned that a battery that is not 100% could be causing these issues. I kind of filed it in the back of my brain at the time. Most recently a German car tech who has a BMW specific scanner mentioned the same to me so off I went to pick up a new one. I've driven it a couple of times only around town since I failed inspection for a check engine light and I didn't want to risk a ticket. No problems so far, but I plan to take it on about a 20 mile jaunt this week when the sun is down to avoid attention.

I did a scan and i found that 4th gear position fault, also low air system fault and i dont know what these indicate
I checked the voltage and battery and they were ok as the volt was 13.5
I am not sure but i think i need to recons the gearbox

Any ideas plz ?

My understanding is that the battery can readk ok when standing still, but under demand the voltage could drop and possibly cause a transmission malfunction. I am still planning on getting rid of mine but I figured trying a new battery was the absolute last thing I could/would do. I even didn't want to pony up for the more expensive properly speced batt for my model so I chose a cheaper one that fits one of our other cars, an '04 Passat.
It's a tad short but with a 0.5" wood spacer it's fine.

I'm having near the same problem. The red cog light and the service engine soon light have both come on. This did not start happening until immediately following a replacement of the starter. When the battery was reconnected a code 16 from the transmission started showing up. Also a code 15 showed up with no description. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Any updates on this?

Im pulling a code 0715 - Output/Turbine Speed Sensor. Is this sensor also known as the pulse sensor? Realoem shows two sensors.

Thank god for e46fanatics. I thought I was the only one. I purchased an 01 325i about 4 weeks ago (privately). I had no issues until last week. I was not sure what the ASC button did (). pressed it once, saw a not-so-nice light turn on, pressed it again and all was good. Last week, the same light came on, along with a yellow handbrake light and yellow ABS light. After my research, I see what this means. No worries, from what I read, the car is still drivable, just keep the led off the brake pedal.

After a day or two, the handbrake light turned to red (all other lights still illuminated). I'm not sure exactly what this means- maybe it's more severe now?

(Also, when I first start the car, the first time I brake, there seems to be a knocking sound and lack of pressure on the brakes. I assume this is something to do with the ABS? After a few more times accelerating and braking, the brakes seem to work fine)

Anyway, last Friday, the clog light came on, the gears wouldn't shift, no Sport option, no manual option etc... I now know this is 'limp mode' or backup mode... It was like this for Fri/Sat - barely drove it - got back in on Monday for work and it was all ok (ASC, park brake and ABD lights still on) - still no trans issues *knock on wood*

Kind of a lie: The auto trans loves to shift REAL QUICK between 2 or 3 (gears 2, 3, 4) different gears when climbing a slight hill. I haven't experienced this in any other cars I've owned...

Long (messy) story short, I'm glad (selfishly) others are experiencing this. I will be taking it to a BMW specialist next week and will let you know how it goes... My biggest fear was that I would have to replace the trans.

Regarding the ABS issue, it seems that this is a result of faulty ABS sensor. Does it need replacing or simply a spit polish?

I am having similar issues.
To me it would seem that I lose throttle when the car is hot but when cold it seems to be fine. Another issue is that I have to press the DSC button when I start the car because if I don't the dame thing may lock up the rear passenger side break. I like the car but if I cannot resolve these issues my first BMW will turn out to be the safest unsafe care I have ever had. Anyway, just checking to see if there are another fixes for the trans safe mode (limp mode) issue other than replacing the battery.

If you have a MAF with a 6 pin plug then check it out. That part drove me nuts and I was stuck in limp mode.

I have a friend with a 2004 330i. The cog and limp mode are occurring. I believe the problem is the maf. When I replace it I will report back.

haahaha am I the only one who knows how to fix this? Not even the DEALER, or various Indy's, or even various BMW masterminds across the country...

Anyways...

Replace the INTAKE SIDE camshaft position sensor.

I've had various experience with this. Report back after you fix, then come praise sweetness.

Game over. Conflict over. Give me the loot!

I finally replaced the maf and no more cog and limp mode. So if your getting 0 volts or low voltage from the maf sensor then you will get the cog and limp mode.

My Ride: 2004 330CI
I have a 2004 330CI. My car would go into limp mode on occassion until one day two weeks ago I was on may way to work and the radio died and dashboard lit up like a christmas tree. Took to a local foreign car shop that specializes in BMW. They said it was the alternator. I replaced it myself. Car has been running fine until today when it went into limp mode again. Stopped car turned off and turned back on and everything ok. Took to auto parts store got codes read. They are P0700, 2240, 0171, 0174 and 1892. Some of those are due to and intake boot crack. I have the part and I will be replacing this weekend. Not sure about Transmission code (I hope it isn't the transmission). They tested battery and said it needs charged. It is the original battery. I am just wondering if limp mode is due to bad battery. Any help would be appreciated.

If it is the original battery it will need changing, they usually last 4-7 years. If the EGS etc or other control modules are not getting correct voltages this could be an indicator. My brother had a vuaxhall corsa with tiptronic / semi auto gearbox, and he got a gearbox light when his battery failed, but im not sure if this is the same on E46's.

Replace the cracked hose and clear the codes and see if limp mode disappears. Several things can cause it to go into limp mode.

2003 330ci 103k miles zf5hp19 tranny. I have replaced my alternator, battery, and starter (in that order) since I purchased my car in oct 2011. Since 2011, my car has seen the "Cog" give or take 5 times. All at a stop signs. I have always turned off my car and back on, and it goes away. one day this happened and my car goes into "limp mode" The only lights on my dash are the service engine light, and the "Cog"

after research I find that I should replace my speed sensor, and turbine sensor, along with changing the ATF fluid.

After these procedures I Have my car re-flashed at Kuni BMW, portland OR.

Car runs So nice! brand new feeling!

(now I tell you I am running aftermarket angle eyes, Aftermarket speakers front only, and a aftermarket subwoofer with amp)

After my car is running so nicely, I decide to hook up my sub. drive for about 10 mins With OUT the music on, and I come to a stop. at the stop I turn on my music, and immediately after I play a song I hear a knock under the car, and my service engine light, and Cog lights come back on.''

this is my story, im still looking for a cause and a cure. I will update here the second I figure it out. Tho I am thinking of just doing a manual swap.
