I said the same thing. But last week, I had an X3 loaner with the N20. And while the X3 is a steaming pile of sh!t (still has a harsh ride and the electronic steering has zero feel), the N20 was amazingly impressive.

I bemoaned the loss of the non-turbo straight six. But I am now a believer. The N20 is a fantastic engine. It is NOT as silky smooth as the straight 6. But it makes up for that with better power at all RPMs. Great engine.

I was amazed at the N55's consistent torque. The only car I've driven with the N55 was the F30 335i Sport. It felt a bit heavy during the turns, but it was a VERY comfortable ride.

The n20 has tons of potential. The f30 328i is as fast as the e9x 335i...

While the N20 may well turn out impressive numbers, and I am impressed by its numbers, it will never have the character or music of a straight six like the N55, much less the soul and aria-like song of my M3's S54. Sometimes a great motor is about more than its numbers.

Go test drive one. Push the sport button and floor it. Hell even half throttle is fast. Dont click the downshift button when flooring it though.

The N20 in my wife's X3 pulls very nicely. I'm impressed by the performance but not by the sound. It idles like a diesel.
