Chevy V-8 in an E46?? Yeah, it's right HERE

The builder of below proto-type is setting up his business to perform engine/trans swaps for a crazy low fee. He has his own mounts and custom CNC brackets to drop in a GM small block and trans.

He retains the factory radiator, shifter, A/C, alternator, P/S, etc. All original accessories run on the factory serpentine belt. He now has the stock ECU reading O2 and crank position data. The cabin is factory where there's no way to tell a V8 growls up front. The hood clearance is shown with a 400ci, Mouse Motor pulling air through a carb set-up. Fuel injection is an option for the new-school owner. Oh yeah, headers are a done deal. This car is sitting level on stock suspension with a 700R4 tranny. Driveline is shortened and balanced.

I'm thinking of a black, 325i vert with a healthy 350/350. It'd be a freakin' A/C Cobra with a BMW badge!! What a sleeper!

THE BUILDER: v8madhatter (new forum member). He may engage here should there be questions?

Me? I just called him from a Craig's list ad to buy his yanked BMW engine. Turned out to be a SULEV, M56 not the one for me. I started asking about the project and he's near road testing this beast. This is pretty cool, thought ya'll might like to see this Monster?? More pics??

major props if you did this yourself.. not my thing, i think it would ruin the car, but one hell of a project, and surprise for anyone that opens the hood

I'd love more pics. That doesn't look anywhere near the level you say it is at.

I think the car will probably twist in half under full throttle with this motor

"He retains the factory radiator", that's a major flaw in my book and worth reconsidering. Inexpensive aftermarket aluminum radiators with stock mounts and without the failure prone expansion tank are available (not talking about Zion).

I do very much consider that this may the best bang for the buck NA upgrade on the planet for an e46. I like the idea personally and have been considering it myself. The weight is about the same believe it or not.

hi guy's well first not sure what you went by "not at level you think it is" if you mean the car sitting level it is half inch higher in front then with the m56 turd in it . if you mean how far along the car is, those pics are from last week and car has been assembled and dissassembled many times to make templates of brakets and adapters.as for the frame it is quite strong.if you look down the frame rails of your bmw you will see that they have a peak and valley shape to them this is for stength.the cars frame is able to handle plenty more then a mid built small block.as to ruining the car bmw did it with the m56. this is a perfect way to make a perfect car. as for radiator it is a double core aluminum and a small block runs at about 14 to 17 lbs in cooling system and with aluminum heads will run even lower. tank should hold up fine. the fist one made it 120000 befor it let lose.so stock a/c system and shrouds will be used, and coolant sensors all in stock places.if your wife drives to store to get milk and a belt breaks see can pull in and get one put on no problem along with many other things.looking to use as many stock parts in stock places as possible.also have tranny shift indicator in cluster working as well.should be fired up late next week!!!!

i shouldnt say "ruin" as in actually ruin it, but i wouldnt like it because i bought the car for the BMW engine, not to mention all the other things i love about it.

if im not mistaken the added weight of the engine would sort of affect the handling, no?

Hatter, not to worry. This Forum breeds trolls and haters. You'll see purists that only drink from the BMW well to complete maniacs modifying these cars into evil machines. Don't be quick to defend your Madness at the first sign of cheap comments. The haters and doubters shall be reckoned with.

Here's a shot they can ponder ...

I would like to think it would work better with the cars that use cable vs. the drive-by-wire. Looks like a cool project, OP!

You'd be really really surprised to know what an aluminum block ls motor weighs. I think it's like 60 pounds more than an m52 motor. So no. It doesn't affect the weight and make the car like a 60s dragster with the rear in the air.

From neither a hater or a maniac, the stock cooling system in these cars is on par with the engine from your perspective. Yours may have made it to 120k. Very many have not, and we're talking stock with all the BMW voodoo fluids used too. A mechanical engineer tore several of these apart and observed many areas that mathematically things weren't working out in BMW's favor. I'm telling you this is a weak point.

I like the idea though.

I ate a bagel and a banana this morning for breakfast, thus throwing off my car's perfect 50/50 weight distribution. I could tell, because it was handling really poorly. I was a bit worried at first, but then I realized the problem, threw up out the window, and didn't magically run my car off the road this morning on the way to work. Crisis averted.

And then I found five dollars.
