Shotguns?

With the current AWB scare, it looks like buying is worthless. I don't need one bad enough to spend 300% above msrp on one. So I'm looking into shotguns now.

I've read that the Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 express are essentially the same thing in regards to quality.

Looking at something like this:

Thoughts?

I've shot deer with both guns as a kid actually... shot my first deer with a 870 Youth, shot my first buck with a Mossberg 500. The 870 was mine as a kid, borrowed my dad's Mossberg when we were hunting that year. After that, I moved to an Ithaca - which I prefer over the Remington or Mossberg - however you'll spend more on an Ithaca...

If you ever get a chance, field strip a Remington 870, and then take apart a Mossberg 500. Once you do, you'll be 100% convinced to buy an 870. Mossberg developed the most idiot disassembly process that could have been conceived for a pump shotgun.

Beyond that, quality is what you make of it. Remington cuts corners in certain areas, Mossberg cuts them in others. If I had the choice between the two, I'd take a Remington any day of the week. I've had numerous Mossbergs malfunction, both in the field and in combat conditions. I realize that many people have Mossberg 500s that run just fine, but I've been burned by Mossberg too many times. I have also had Remingtons malfunction on me in training, but their malfunctions are not to the level of the Mossbergs, and the Remingtons we have that malfunction do so because of maintenance issues and high use.

If a tactical shotgun is really what you are looking for, Benelli is the place to go. If you don't want an auto, the Benelli Nova/SuperNova is a great option. If you want something else, then the Remington 870 is the next best option IMO.

If you chose to get a Remington 870, look out for the Wingmaster. The build of that 870 trumps the Express by a milestone (trigger is metal, wood is real....etc)

I bought my Wingmaster used for $300. Serial puts the build-date to 1971 IIRC. The gun is flawless however.

How about a Maverick? Good quality shotgun (made by mossberg) and half the cost.

Didn't realize a Benelli could be had for $400. I'll probably go with that.

Benellis are ridiculously reliable and durable shotguns. The Nova and SuperNova also have a slide grip that is better than any other gun on the market, because it extends back so far. This is a huge help to people with a shorter length of pull, which helps reduce the chances of short-stroking rounds.

IIRC 18.5" is a standard length barrel for self defense.

The choke is as important though as a barrel length. Which I cannot comment on for what a proper choke is.

18.5" is the minimum length unless you want to register it as an SBS. 14-14.5" is common for SBS's. The shorter the barrel, the better due to maneuverability issues. That's for tactical use. For sporting use it depends on what you want to use it for.
For tactical use, a cylinder choke is the most ideal. Cyclinder is actually no choke at all; just a straight bore. If that is not available, the next best option is an Improved choke.

Regardless of what you decide, if you buy, you do understand that gratuitious gun porn pics are mandatory, right?

I like the 18.5 tactical, but I like the dual barrel look. Found something that looks to be what I want. What exactly is this? Sorry for the newb questions.

Edit: bottom part. That's the same gun I'm looking at. Flashlight, laser?

That looks like a Benelli Nova Pump Tactical with extended Magazine tube, and an Insight Technologies Shotgun Adapter..
