I tried? :(

I tried the "m" button thing, but I get no SW number... Just SN and I can use the "clock button" to switch it through to various other confusing things. I'd really like an aux cable. :S

Did you ever get an Aux setup on your ride? I've got the same radio in my 2001 325xi & also really want the Aux Input.

Hi,

Instead of starting a new thread, I'm gonna reply here with my question.
I've got a 2002 330CI and was offered an AUX cable (part #82110149389), and after plugging it in, it won't simply switch to AUX when I press the MODE button.
Looks like my cd-radio unit is too old, or something else is missing in my car.

The unit has those specs:
Model NO. CD53 E46
P/NO. 64. 12-6 915 711
SW/NO. 40
HW/NO. 40
KW: 35/01

In the trunk I see nothing about satellite radio, only radio/cd/security.
My car doesn't have any navigation system.

So what do you guys think my options are?
Should I return the AUX cable and get something else (not sure they'll take it back)?
Is there a way to trick my cd unit into activating AUX mode? (I don't care about CD functionality, ok to sacrifice it)
Should I get a newer bmw cd-radio unit? (no idea of the cost and I don't want to have non-bwm cd player that will look out of place)

Thank you.

EDIT:
I just found this thread (http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=685004) where someone managed to plug his aux cable directly to the cd changer pins. Many many people said that was impossible without the actual cd changer. Confusing.
And so did that guy: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1763361

Also what I don't understand is what are the AUX pins for if the HU is too old to support AUX mode?

I'm not sure about your HU being too old or not. But what did occur to me is to tell you about making sure to have something "active" plugged into AUX input (iPhone, iPod, mp3 player, whatever) before you try to switch to it. The AUX is auto-sensing, so if you don't have anything actually plugged in, the mode button won't switch to it.

Just in case you haven't tried that...

That's $135 + $30 for the iphone 5 adapter.
I think I'm gonna go with a grom aux at $75.

I really don't get why they have aux pins in the back of the HU if nothing can work with it because of some version date.

It could've been that they planned for AUX functionality in the future and it would have been cheaper to start producing the same hardware right away (no change in manufacturing process), even though it wasn't implemented in software yet. Perhaps.

BTW, I was in a similar situation few years ago... Decided to buy a used HU with a newer SW version from a fellow fanatic. But in my case, I was replacing a tape-cassette HU too, so I got a newer HU plus a CD player, so it was a no-brain-er. In your case, you might see whether it would be worth getting a HU and using the AUX cable vs getting a CD changer compatible converter.
