Actually it will work. All years E46 from 1998 to 2001 and 2002 thru 2006 that are prewired for phone can DEFINITELY have the Bluetooth set up retrofitted!!!!

It has been done a few times over the years and recorded right here in the DIY section.

even a 2001 car with navigation shows it can be done:

and if you don't want to go the tedious/expensive OEM route the Parrot ck3000/Connects CTPPAR007 will give all years 1998 thru 2006 BMW E46 cars proper Bluetooth and Voice Command for around $100 and 1hr DIY time.

no I meant to say...

if you have a 2003 or earlier car you need to follow the DIY in this thread: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...=bluetooth+oem

I just realized I have the BMW Bluetooth to CD53 and MK4 owner's booklet in my glovebox.
Very insightful stuff:

Very Easy Instructions

These instructions work great on 04 330ci convertible. I purchased the TCU from the dealership for $300 and the bluetooth antenna for $19.50. Thanks

Hands down the best TCU DIY on this site for 2004s. Thanks for the work.
