Subject: Proposed Firearm Legislation

Due to the recent events at Sandy Hook elementary school we now face renewed threats to our Constitutional rights. While I understand how painful the loss must be for those touched by this tragedy, blaming firearms or their owners and punishing them is not the answer to the challenges we face as a nation.

We already have laws that were violated by a man who was likely psychotic and heavily medicated. This man was stopped by the mandatory background check from purchasing firearms. He then decided to murder his mother and take her legally owned firearms to commit this tragedy.

If your true goal is to protect our children, then enact legislation that will do that. Banning firearms that are rarely used in crime (less than 1% of the time) is not going to stop such tragedies, that was proven in 1999 when the Columbine shooting took place under the 1994 ban. Do something meaningful, please. Make committing the insane easier. Put armed security guards in our schools. But do not strip us of our rights and property by passing additional anti-gun laws that have historically had no positive effect on crime in our nation or others.

As our whole nation grieves, we wait for more information about the killer's motives and means. We all want to do something to halt such senseless killings, but the question is always what law could have stopped an individual apparently so determined to commit such violent and destructive acts.

I think that sounds hopeful. It's a bit hard to tell.

I'm writing one myself. I've decided. After I just found out an AR wasn't even used and that politicians and the media have been lying to the public to try and get this passed, my letter will be very very strong worded. Furious.

Im right there with you, been at it for a few days but I feel I'm not making progress. What concerns me is Obamas statement, the American people have spoken and we will take action to ban high capacity magazines etc. I wonder who he thinks the American people are?

I want Obama to admit to the American public what the real facts were. Motherfvcker. I hate the ignorance of the average American...spoon fed bullsh1t and they eat it up, then try to make us out to be villains.

National Geographic is probably one of the highest capacity magazines I've ever seen.

Slowly calming down...I don't know what to believe at this point with all the bullsh1t that's been thrown around. I think I better take a nap

The only thing that gives me hope is that congress can't get anything done, and certainly can't agree on anything.

It could take months to get something like this crap passed.

One of those few instances where I'll say thank god for ineffective government.
