.22LR Pistol Suggestions

My other half has finally given the go ahead to get one of these things and so I'm looking for suggestions. Looking for it to be a pistol trainer as well as just a fun plinking toy. I may at some point upgrade it to a target pistol so that capability should still be there.

Current front runner is a Ruger Mk3 with the Browning Buckmark close behind it. I've heard a lot of not so good things about the P22 and the Mosquito.

Any thoughts and recommendations from you guys?

I have the M&P22 and it's been great.

I had a Heritage before it was stolen.. but it was a good straight shooting .22 revolver. Not the greatest gun, but it was cheap and worked.

I had a Walther P22, accurate but too small for my hands. Pain in the ass to break down. I prefer the Sig Mosquito. Regardless, both work great with CCI Mini Mags and should not give you an issue with that ammo. Where people have problems is with cheap ammo and not cleaning the dirty 22 enough. Just my personal experience. I love the 22LR. Matter of fact, taking my Umarex HK MP-5 22LR and Sig Mosquito out to the range tomorrow with the Desert Eagle 50, MPA MAC-10, and Beretta 92. I love shooting cheap with the 22.....especially now since ammo can suck to find locally.

we've got a Ruger SR-22 that's great.

You really can't go wrong with a Mk II or Mk III.

I like the p22, just because its a decent silencer host (until it gets hot)

As far as the ruger goes, I perfer the standards myself but the mkii and mkIII are both good guns. I have a MKII target thats one of the more accurate pistols that I've ever owned.

I do have a soft spot for the browning challenger, IMHO much better than the buckmark.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. Unfortunately, they don't make the Challenger anymore and the ones I could find are far out of the price range of what I could get a brand new gun for.

While I like the look and feel of the P22, M&P22, and Mosquito, I'd love to have a gun that shoots everything from the cheap Rem Gold Bullets all the way to the expensive match ammo without issues. That's why I was leaning towards the Mk3 and the Buckmark. Also, not interested in revolvers but thanks for the recommendation.

Anyone have experience with the Mk3 or the Buckmark that they'd be willing to share? Thanks Tailo for sharing yours, if you enjoyed your mk2 I'm sure it's a fantastic pistol.

I like the mkII but they really are ho-hum.

Get the target model if you can, the adjustable sights and bull barrel really help.

My local FFL has one LNIB for $450 for a SS mkII with bull barrel and target sights. It's identical to mine and will shoot dang close to my old 2011 target pistol.

I have a Ruger Mark III hunter with a 4.5" barrel. The whole gun is stainless steel. Has a nice balanced weight and shoots great. If you do look at one stay away from the standard model as the front sight cannot be changed. Go for the target, hunter or competition models. The only downside is the gun can be quite a pain to field strip and clean.

The gun has shot every ammo I've put through it, most of which being bulk Federal or CCI. I've had a handful of FTE due to grime and powder caked behind the ejector after 500+ rounds.

The ruger would be great to fit your needs as a trainer and pinker. The gun has magazine disconnect which doesn't allow the mag to drop while the bolt is back. Drops down about half an inch and you must manually remove it. As well a loaded chamber indicator. Both are great for helping new shooters. The gun can also be modified to remove these features. The gun also comes with a weaver mount for optics.
