Do I oil my air filter or not?

I have an AFE intake on my 330ci, which the previous owner neglected, and the filter is disgusting. I got a cleaning kit (my work sells em for 7 bucks!) and I am not sure if I should oil the filter once its dry or not. Heres some pics

It seemed oily but some AFE filters you dont oil and some you do. Help

Buy a new one that doesn't use oil.

try to see what marking are on it and color when cleaned to define which one it is. if it's the one that is re-useable (and oiled)then clean and when dry re-oil and NOT over-oil as some novices do. you will be fine and good to go.

aFe intake systems are higher quality and designed than most.

Some are not meant to take oil though. I always thought my Gruppe M was an oil based air filter until I read an online manual one day. The filter is made by K&N for that housing and it's not oil based.

What prompted me to do some research was that everytime I'd clean and oil it, right afterward I'd get an SES code - "air/fuel mixture at outer limits", that would come on from time to time when I ran the filter until I discovered that you weren't supposed to spray it down with oil.

The Stage 2 has different intake piping and has a oil filter, so Im gonna assume you do not oil this one, I believe mine is the stage 1. BTW put it back in, and the car runs 10 times better now. No weird idling and it doesnt feel laggy. Why did I not do this earlier

The info I found on GruppeM says it is wet based. Even their site shows it as red. K&N filters are cotton color when cleaned and the oil is red and that makes the filter red. My genuine GruppeM filter is this same off-white color when cleaned.

Hmmm, mine is blue. It's a mess when it's oiled.
