I have 2 20-round pmags on backorder through CheaperThanDirt.

I've gotten my hands on 100rounds. I have about 92 rounds left ( I was deer hunting when I picked up the gun on Sat, only have time to pop off a couple rounds before grabbing my 300wsm and heading to the treestand...)

I wouldn't fire off any more rounds, conserve what you have. Try to get your hand on as much ammo as possible, try to get a box of 1000 rounds from sportsman guide or similar websites. You can backorder ammo for a reasonable price from sportsman guide. Pmags are going to be tough to get.

Good luck!

I'd spend your time hunting down the stuff you may never be able to get again in six months. Ammo will always be around, nobody's going to ban 5.56 NATO. Prices will come back down when the current rush is over, you may just not be able to shoot for a while. Find mags and lowers as much as possible.

I have 2 steel 20-round mags, and then 2 pmags on backorder. Supposedly they expect to ship anytime between now and Jan 16. I could have ordered more, but I only want two for my own use... not trying to collect or resell.

I don't really have the $$ for another lower at the prices they've been going for, although if I did... I'd probably get a 308 and set it up with a heavy barrel & scope...

You can give it a shot. That said, they're full of shit if they say they're actually selling to the military. They can be intending to sell to the military, or submit ammo for testing to the military, but ATK and Black Hills Ammunition are the only two companies making 5.56 and 7.62 for the US military.

Besides magazines and ammunition...

First, clean it and lubricate it. See this post for BCG lubrication instructions: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpos...&postcount=961. It is very important to lubricate it before you shoot, every time. An AR will function just fine if it's dirty, but will quickly seize up without lubrication.

Second, shoot it. You don't need to break in the barrel. Just go shoot the snot out of it and see how it feels. If you get through 500-1,000 rounds with no malfunctions then you should be good to go. Get a feel for the AR before you start swapping out components. Without a baseline, you won't know if a change was worth it.

Maintenance items:
Field Repair Kit (I got mine from PSA) - springs, wear item replacements. Basically if the AR goes down in the field, the kit includes most items to get it back running.
Gas rings

Accessories:
If this will be used for home defense, then a light and a sling.

I just took another look at that picture that you posted from FB. It may just be crafty advertising. They don't actually say that they make ammunition for the military, they say that they make it "for military and LE use". That probably means that they make it to the same specs, but it's misleading either way.

Agreed on shooting it to "break it in" - never had a barrel break in procedure. I just shoot rounds and make sure I don't cook the gun (get the barrel to hot) - done this with all my hunting rifles, and they've all turned out to be tack drivers.

I don't plan on this for home defense - mind you, it's always an option depending on situations - but this will primarily be a range gun. I bought it to have fun shooting, as all my other guns are either high-power lightweight for hunting or 12g slug (some areas I hunt used to require shotgun only) - I kill my shoulder maybe shooting these guns 3-4 shots a piece, and they're damn well near $3-4 per shot with the ammo I shoot.

Eventually I would like to put some form of optics/scope on the AR, and that is my only planned mod at this point...

I'll have to check out the repair kits - and I will be getting lube before this weekend, as I only keep Hoppes oil in my box as of now..

Yep. Placed the order on friday night after getting home from buying the LMT lower (thanks again to you and Reedo).

I cancelled the complete upper I ordered from them earlier in the day. So now I've got a quality spare lower, for which I'm already planning future SBR build (assuming it's still legal)

Yes, they apparently anticipated the rush and planned ahead. I was told this morning that they don't accept orders for rifles, unless they're built and in stock
