Early heads had issues with oil flow to lifters (similar to M52s and some M54s) but later ones got updated lifters and then updated heads. Early head bolts were also prone to breaking.
The Valvetronic system is probably the most unreliable part, especially the eccentric shaft sensor. Requires taking the valve cover off to change it, which is a lot more annoying than an M50-series motor, but not the end of the world.

Thanks! All in all, would you say more reliable than the M54/6? That Valvetronic issue sounds like the VANOS seal issue in terms of complexity and annoyance lol Is it a maintenance thing or something that goes out?

At this point, I'd say it's about the same. Probably goes longer in between CCV changes, but Valvetronic adds more complexity. The sensor just has to be changed when it goes out. It'll cause stumbling issues and/or limp mode like a bad DISA.

Don't have much experience with the 4.8.

I know my mom is probably wanting the V8 and my dad wants fuel efficient. And I'm not sure a 3.0L-6 is up to the task of hauling around a big grocery getter


...fast enough My dad has becomes really interested in the X5 the last two weeks I guess a friend of his got one and he liked the look of it.

Yeah, they do rather suck at everything. Pricing, service, and selection are all mediocre to poor, but I guess when you make $20 on a $6 part you can suck at a lot of things.

Because diesels are heavy and don't make much power, compared to their gasoline equivalent. Americans use most light trucks and suvs like passenger cars and want to go fast, which power does.
