Well, you just have to be aware that you're paying way over what the lowers were costing weeks ago.

Do you have a sense of what you want to do? Stripped and build it all yourself? Or complete and save you hassle?

You're right...a lower would be a priority.
These are basically the guidelines I have found....

No folding or telescoping stock. No flash hider. Cannot be an colt AR-15. Magazine capacity cannot be more than 15 rounds
There are some more specifically banned rifles...I guess I will need to go to a local joint and see what they can get...if anything...god I hate this state....cant wait to leave.

I have an acquaintance that can help me build it. I have also been told that they are not too difficult to build. If I can install a clutch on a car and install a lift on my Jeep, I should be able to do it...slowly. I have heard that building yourself can save you over 30% of the cost of the rifle.

Well, when do you want to do this? I'll start looking for uppers and post some up that seem like good deals, but I'm not going to bust my balls on it unless you're committed and you want to start this ASAP. You have to be prepared to grab a deal when it pops up.

I wish I could sticky this. Start here: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpos...postcount=1796

That should provide you the basics of quality manufacturers, and what is needed to build up an AR from a stripped lower.

David answered most of your questions already, but I'll add my two cents. At this point, hunting down the parts, accessories, and tools to build your own upper and lower is going to be very difficult. It's good to hear that you are willing to wait, and I applaud you for asking about quality parts first.

Take a few minutes to read through the link in the post above. It will outline all of the parts, accessories, and tools that are required if you decide to build everything yourself, or just the lower, and links with instructions on how to do so. The lower shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. The only difference between the instructions and your final build, is that your stock must be pinned.

If you buy the lower and separately, you will save yourself the 11% excise tax from purchasing a complete AR. I don't know if 30% is a realistic savings for building your own AR from parts, especially if you don't have any of the tools.

Daniel Defense is still offering the DDM4 option on their site, where you can build a custom upper. They are limiting it to about 100 a day, and they sell out quickly, but they ARE still offering it. The counter resets at midnight eastern, so you would need to get in there ASAP. You will pay MSRP, but that's probably less than you would pay for a complete upper (including BCG and Charging Handle, and I believe iron sights) anywhere else right now.

Just wondering if this is a typo (and you mean lowers)...seems wrong to buy uppers until I secure a lower no?

You're right, my apologies. I did mean lowers. That being said, parts are going to be difficult to come by all around.

Honestly, I think my best plan of action is to get a lower (hell, or two) of quality ASAP. Everything else can be done later. Any help getting a lower (brand new) of quality will be appreciated and will DEFINITELY not be a waste of time. I'm ready to buy yesterday. I really appreciate the help David, truly.

Not trying to hijack but I'm in the exact same boat as OP. I have a question regarding the lower and mags. I hear talk of gen2s gen3s, metal, plastic, something about buttoned, etc., are all mags interchangeable in any lower? Is there some spec to look out for when purchasing the lower regarding this?

You're in cali, so you are in my boat (smaller than mine...) you can have a max of 10 I believe and I can only have 15 round mags.

Realistically guys, how long do you think I have? How long do you think it will take them to shove this ban down our throats? I'm looking at gunbroker, and I'd rather pay $300 for a $100 lower than wait to long and have nothing. Thoughts?

Gen 1. $399. Brand new though. I guess the next words out of your mouth is "get the gen 2."

Honestly, it's not the worst deal today. Sure, I prefer Gen 2s, but the Gen 1s are great lowers. Is this listed somewhere where you could send an offer or is it on gunbroker or something?

PM me the listing...I won't steal it, you have my word. I'd just rather see the goods
