whistling noise when starting

2001 , 325ci 5spd.208k, 33mpg, I love this ride...9th BMW
This just started.
High pitched whistle when cold engine started.
Goes away after engine warms up.
Both intake boots new, icv cleaned, disa cleaned and inspected. Both idlers and tensioners replaced.
I looked for torn or ripped hoses , nothing found.
Any ideas?

Secondary air injection pump perhaps? It will make a small whistle noise-that is normal. I'm presuming after 208k you know what is normal vs. not normal though.

That pump could very well be on its way out though, listen to that and see if the noise goes away when it shuts off.

Mine does exactly the same. Do you happen to know what it is?

If it happens when you start up and goes away around 2 mins later, then it's associated with your secondary air pump (on the passenger side of the engine), as RG5384 mentioned above. The video sounds more like bearing noise. When was the last time the tensioners were replaced?

Yeah mine usually goes away after a couple mins or when the car gets warm. Could you help me out and inform me on what it could be and where exactly is it at? I am fairly new to BMW's and would like to most do most of the work myself rather than mechanics.

had the same noise and it was my idler & tension pulley. Noise went away for one whole day and returned? I'm hoping that its just the tension pulley for the power steering or A/C (forgot what the second belt was for) that I heard today.

Is this a bad thing or an easy fix?

not bad, harder on the auto vs manual trans. But its an easy DIY. Search "pulley" and there is a nice write up on water pump, expansion tank, and pulley replacement. I didnt replace the A/C pulley nor did I check it. When I took off both pulley they were toast so glad I replaced them before I had something major happen. Think it was about $60 for both.

I did get that same noise again today as I was in a drive thru. What I noticed today was if I put my car in Neutral the sound pretty much went away. Back in drive the noise came back. After the car sat for a few hours I started it up in the garage and hear nothing so will see how tomorrow goes. Maybe I will have to replace the A/C pulley just to rule it out and probably should have.

Idle pulley $36 BMW or $25 OEM, complete AC tensioner $56 OEM or $90 BMW, complete water pump/alt mechanical tensioner $53 OEM. Some have updated to the hydraulic tensioner which was a BMW update, runs $100 for OEM. If you just want to replace the pulley on the mechanical tensioner(s), get Dayco 89133 from Amazon for $19 or Autozone sells it under their brand name to. Made by OEM INA. BMW prices from discounting BMW sponsor TheBMWPartStore.com and OEM from Autohausaz.com.

I got mine at the parts store, Dayco was the brand. Took a video this am of my noise ill try to upload to see if anyone has an idea. I can't tell if its my pulley, possibly bad new pulley, or if its the intake boot issue. What's odd is in neutral or park it goes away. I hear it the most in drive while completely stopped.

tore it apart again, took off the new pulley's and made sure they were torqued to spec. All good, took off A/C belt and the sound went away so I removed the pulley and it sounded shot so hopefully this was the issue and if so I suggest to just replace all 3 while you have the front end apart especially if your an automatic. If it turns out its something else I will report back
