Advise on 320d sport touring.... Please

Hi folks, I'm looking at upgrading the e36 soon and got my heart set on an e46 sport tourer! Now I know from my previous BMW's that there are that many variations and packages available, iv done some research but its endless!
Would anyone here be able to advise me on what to look out for and what to avoid? And also any common mechanical or electrical gremlins I should be looking for?

Cheers

Paul!

most of us are from the US and we dont get the diesel engines

I am guessing the cooling system, maintenance items like brakes, susp, fuel filters, gaskets, etc

The touring is based 100% mechanically on the sedan

I've had a 2004 320 cd M sport in the past, no problems whatsoever. I haven't heard of the timing chain snapping from anybody else. Or the BMW specialist I go to is a good friend of mine, he would've advised to stay away if it was that common of a fault. I don't know, but thanks for the caution good luck with finding an engine.

Swirl flaps, i've heard of a few turbo related issues with the m47n engines aswell as the crank case breather which should have been replaced with a vortex breather. other than that, go buy 1, fantastic cars, love mine! If i were you i'd go for the m47n engine which was brought in late 2002 iirc, power was increased from 136 to 150bhp with this engine, which made a massive difference (when i was looking to buy 1) aswell as go for the 6spd gearbox if you can.
