Smile Door lock!!!

Hi i drive a 320d E46 the key has never worked by remote so have always used the key to lock and unlock. Yesterday i locked the car and heard something
fall down inside the door. I was locked out with no way of getting in. Had to pop a rear window to get in very messy.I have ordered a lock repair kit from e bay. Can someone explain how to remove the door lock without taking the door apart??

Hopefully you're fixed it by now, but if not, the 320d is a sedan, right? The link above is for a coupe. Sedan instructions are basically the same, but a bit easier to access the allen bolt:

Pay attention to step #2, or you will risk having the bolt fall inside the door, then you have no choice but to take everything apart.

By the way, when you said you had to pop a rear window, did you mean break the glass? I guess you won't like to hear that you could have opened the trunk with your key and crawled through the the fold down rear seats. That's what I had to do earlier this week (one of the most embarrassing things I've done in a long time - luckily I left work late, so it was dark and not too many people around).
