All shops say that... I went to a popular shop here in LI inquiring about installing my SK1 kit and they told me it takes 20+ hours to install. Wanted over 2200 for install only!

I ended up installing it with a friend over the weekend. Took us about 15 hours but we're not mechanics nor do we have all the tools a shop would. In fact, that was my first SC install ever. Saved me some money and learned tons about the kit during the install to help troubleshoot in the furture.

Being a former employee of a few car dealerships (I am sure Walter can collabrate on this), basically how most shops work is they bill jobs at a hourly rate and how many hours on average it will take, even if the job takes only half the time of actual work. At car dealers (especially BMW, Mercedes, and Audi), car tech's will routinely make over 100k a year because they get paid by the job (which has a certain hour designation) no matter how much time it takes them. So it could take them 20 mintues to do a job that is billed at 1.5 hours, so they can take on more jobs in their free time, or as Walter suggested, a long lunch Sometimes you just have to pay to play if you don't want to do the install yourself. A mercedes tech I know installed H&R sports and Bilstein sport shocks on my C class (when I had one) in 45 minutes flat! If he had made me pay for it, I am sure the bill would have been 4-500 in a real shop. You really just need to find a shop that will bill by the hourly rate that is actually takes them and not give a predesignated number, which can be hard to find (in my experience). It's all about building relationships, you may pay too much for one job, but then a shop will help you out with a small problem for free, it usually evens out. That being said, Valley Motorwerks opens soon, with great tech's and prices (free commercial), operators are standing by....ha.
