Remove airbag warning from visors?

Has anyone tried this? Any success? I've done a bit of searching, and the threads seem to get a lot of replies from non-convertible owners telling how they did it on their cloth visors (peel it off, maybe with heat and follow up with goo gone). They may not realize that ours are vinyl. That's why I figured it may get a better understanding in this forum.

I've tried some mild solvents, but didn't want to get too aggressive and ruin the things. The warning seems to almost be silk screened on. It really detracts from the clean look of the interior.

Is it legal to remove? Many places won't pass inspection without it.

No car inspection here in Florida, and when I lived in NJ, it wasn't something they'd check. I think it's more of a CYA for BMW. Any inspector would have to know the placement of the placard on every car they see.....which would be tough to do.

The PO peeled the warning off the aluminum trim above my glove box....and the stupid thing had actually etched itself into the aluminum. You can still see the ghost image. I may look to pick up a new one from the dealer, as it kind of bugs me.

Place an alcohol-soaked paper towel on the decal and wait an hour. The decal should just slide right off.

Well, it kind of worked. I can still see where the decal was. I tried soaking in more alcohol, and rapidly scrubbing with a stiff brush. That seemed to make it a touch better, but it's still pretty obvious something was there. I tried some Goo Gone just for the heck of it. It's not sticky at all, just kind of a ghost outline of where with the decal was. More like lots of little white specs that define the rectangle.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like how mine went (with the ghost rectangle). You were removing nine-year-old labels; my BMW was about 7 when I removed them. When I did it to my Jetta the car was brand new, and the decals never had a chance to set in so they came off cleanly.

As far as the white specks, I wonder if Magic Eraser might be able to do anything about that.

Good call on the magic eraser. Those things have gotten me out of more than one jam (and work great on vinyl boat seats). Unfortunately, they didn't do a thing to my visor. I've added a pic so people can see what the visor looks like now. I guess the older the decal is, the tougher it is to get off. I'll keep trying stuff.

Oh, and that round mark? Don't get pissed and try using a Dremel....even if you run it on it's slowest speed, Ugh.

I'll post up if I get it looking any better.

Thanks. Good idea. I didn't have any acetone handy, but the GF had some nail polish remover, which is basically acetone.....It made no difference.

Keep the ideas coming. I'm thinking I'll be ordering one of these from the dealer in the future, so I'm willing to experiment a bit on this one to help out the next guy. Maybe I'll get lucky and run across just the right voodoo juice that'll do the trick.

Yep, nail polish has some stuff in it to moisturize the skin, but it's mostly acetone. I had tried Goo Gone earlier in the thread. It's not really sticky at all. It's a little difficult to explain.

I have removed it from cloth ZHP, leather M5 and vinyl e46 - i could swear I used acetone maybe paint stripper - but you wouldnt want to leave it on long

I have had good success with goo gone, but did it over a period of time. It doesn't have to be sticky to use GG, and you need to let it soak each time. Just keep hitting it for a few weeks. Eventually it should get the residue out of the microscopic nooks and crannies within the vinyl that you don't see or feel.

Now that you've scratched it with the Dremel, I would suggest you paint it.
