Its my 4th BMW and by far my favorite of the lot. Also the newest.

Not really as painful as you might imagine. I had led the modern day BMW revolution in the US having owned an original first year BMW 2002 purchased brand new. Then I chose to skip over all the BMW's in between because none of them really appealed to me. Living in the city with no need of a car it was not really top of mind to wonder when the car would be delivered to my US dealer. Got there in June, and shortly thereafter I took it out to LA and back over about seven weeks. Great car to explore the US with!

I'm at about 250 miles after the install. Car was down for 3 days due to fuel pump fail. Install of new pump went well and took about 20 minutes. So far, the car feels the same as before and drives just fine. Haven't opened her up all the way on the highway due to break in period but will next week.

I'm not clear on what you're breaking in?

The VANOS seals. Sorry, it does sound like I'm trying to break in the fuel pump.

You'll be eager to hit the road tomorrow running then!
Rajaie himself explained that there is no break-in for the vanos seals.

Lol, why would their install instructions say 200 miles are needed to fully break in the seals for optimum performance. I've even seen him reply to someone's post telling them to post back after 200 miles.

yes, what he means is you have to wait 200 miles before expecting to see an improvement. So don't judge too quickly.

But you can drive your car like the wind immediately. Raj has even written that it helps to break in the seals faster.

Think about this; the seals do not rotate at camshaft speed. They just move in and out of the bore in response to the camshaft timing changes. Very slo linear speed.
That's the purpose of the thrust bearing. Camshaft rotates, pistons don't turn.

Oh I see what you mean. Sounds good. I'll give her a good romp on Monday. I'm really hoping that the upper end will be better. It seemed very laggy above 60 MPH before the seals.

What's the history of your DISA?

DISA is still kicking. One of the first things I did when I bought this car is replace the seal because I thought it was the source of a SES light. It ended up being the torn intake boot elbow.

Anyway, I just changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, and did a Seafoam treatment into the throttle body. Power is really good. Definitely a BIG difference in the upper end. Much more pull. The lower end seems to be better as well. Much smoother rev all around. The seals are a MUST for any 100k+ E46. Love it.

Cool Afe

Use AFE

just wondering what type of air filter you use? K&N, Fram, OEM...?

It seems like the K&N (and similar ones) let more dirt into the engine and cause dirtier oil.[/QUOTE]
