What could cause this?

Any ideas what could cause the black buildup? This is between the cylinder head and block, at the front passenger side. Seems that an oil leak at the head gasket would be rather obvious if that was the problem?

Car runs well. 330Ci with 98,000 miles on it.

Thanks!

Hard to tell where that from your pic, at east for me Most common leak on these cars is the valve cover gasket. If your has not been replaced, I'd start there.

Good point. I cleaned up the to top of the engine pretty well when I changed the valve cover gasket, but would have missed this area. Didn't see this until after, when I had the car in the air.

Should probably just clean it up and keep an eye on it.

In that corner, there is the sap valve gasket, the vanos solenoid (silver cap size of film canister) and a cps sensor. Solenoid and cps both have o-rings that are replaceable.

Oh, and also, the gap between vanos cover and cylinder head...did you put rtv across the seam where they meet?
