Every 15k miles it is recommended to at least check the valves, and if necessary, adjust them.

You check (inspect the valves) for need of adjustment at every "Inspection" interval (approx 30k miles). You should perform a valve adjustment at Inspection II (approx 60k). The reason for the approxi. tag is, depending on how you drive the car determines how much sooner the service intervals become.
You can check your valves at a more frequent interval of your choosing if you so desire. You can set the lash anywhere within the specs of your choosing if you're performing the work. (some like the tolerances close, some the middle, some on the loose side) M3 as far as I know, not sure if any regular E46 have similar valvetrain.

The inspection interval for the E46 m3 is actually every 30k miles or about 49000km. If you are not sure when the previous owner did it last, you should do in now and go from there.

The search function is your friend. Try this forum, M3F has great write ups and don't forget Google. You will want to rent a shim kit and removal/install tool from a forum member. You also need a 32mm or 1-1/4 wrench, as well as a set of calipers or a micrometer.

Check out the link in my sig. There is a DIY, spreadsheet, and TIS that may be helpful.
