@zuckuss00; I would have to agree at least in my case. Before I spun a bearing in the block of my M52TUB25 motor I never ever had any oil burning issues of any sort. When I upgraded my block to a M54B30 motor I instantly inherited oil consumption issues. I'm now burning about a quart every 800 miles and I change my oil religiously every 7.5k. I ordered a four pack of MOA for my engine using the link provided. Additionally, I found that when me motor is low on coolant I seem to burn more oil. Don't know the direct correlation at the moment but I will keep the forum posted.

How have you determined that your oil burning is definitely the oil rings? |

330,000 original miles on my engine is all, nothing more, nothing less... I spoke to my mechanic and he told me that 13 years of driving and many, many miles...

Many miles of happy motoring. That's a history to respect. And in the Northeast where they salt the roads. Body still sound? I'm impressed!!! Last edited by Stinger9; 12-31-2012 at 09:54 PM. |

I drive my daily year around and wash it religiously in the winters in order to keep the salt and chemical damage to a minimum...

I suspect it might have something to do with how the motors were burned in. |

Chasing the same 200 miles per quart problem. No leaks, just sooty exhaust. I have upped the viscosity to 10W40. I don't expect any change, but we will see. BG is TOP quality product, so e-bay here I come.

I have put over 1000 miles since my engine swap a few months ago. I noticed that I am also burning oil especially during high rpm applications. For the first 500 or so, I didn't drive the car like I stole it so the oil consumption wasn't even noticeabe. The last 500, I was cruising at 90-100mph (3.5-4K RPM) and when I checked the oil it was low.
I jacked up the car and the engine compartment is clean and has no evidence of any leaks. sent from my HTC EVO+ using Bimmer App |

What are the specs of the 10W40? Is it a thin or thick 40W?

I didn't chew. I already know that you are going preach LL stuff. If that was great, how come people are having consumption issues with dealership oil?

And I just ordered some MOA. If I can get to 1000 miles a quart, I plan on selling the wagon. If it improves to 2000 mile/qt, I may keep it. I am used to a parade of GM vehicles (4, 6, and 8 cylinders) that, at their WORST, consumed a qt every 5000 miles. "If I knew THEN what I know NOW", I would not have bought a Bimmer newer than an E36.

Not a bimmer that consumes oil, but a poorly broken in car.
For some reason lots of BMW's get treated poorly during the break-in. My car burns only a few ounces in my 7500 mile changes, and I know I am far from alone. |

No. Again is it a thin 40W or a thick 40W? If you don't understand just post the oil specs from the container label

You may just be the dunbest person posting here yet. A 40W oil can vary in viscosity from nearly a 30W to almost a 50W and be called a 40W. If you don't understand tribology, best you don't post on an oil thread!

And YOU may be the most overbearing person here. Oh, you can't spell either.

I ran your personality profile and it comes up you believe more in astrology than science. We have no need for that!
