newb - 1999 318i E46 - oil service reset
hi
just recently purchased a 1999 318i E46 w/ 189Kms. previous owner does the oil change by himself and noticed the -7950 inspection on the cluster but i reset it and now reads oil service 25000km. will this suppose to stay as 25000 or should it be getting lesser while using the car ? because i already drive the car but it still say oil service 25000 thanks |

The oil service will decrease as you drive, but be aware that it will not necessarily decrease at a rate of 1km driven = 1km off the indicator.

-7950 would mean you're already 7950 past the "recommended" service point.

The figure will go down by 500Km increments. So it will show no change untill you drive at least 500 kms. But, 25,000 km is a long time before you do an oil change. Mine resets to either 11,000 or 15,000 kms, I forget which.
This shows you how to reset.

Thanks for all your help.
BTW anybody tried having the oil change in MIDAS auto? They will be using Valvoline oil ? the other independent BMW car shop (BMWise - adelaide) said they will be using castrol 5w 30 as receommended by BMW MIDAS is a 110aud cheaper but not sure if there will be significant issue with the brand of oil ? Whats ideal here in Australia ? MIDAS said the valvoline oil they will be using is LL01 and as per BMW spec as well. Just recently got the bimmer and wanted to start the maintenance in a right way with all your help as well ![]() Thanks again |

I personally have never heard of anyone using Valvoline in their 3 series before. Most use OEM Castrol 5W30 or Mobil 1 0W40.

For what it is worth a DIY oil change takes 15 minutes and requires no special trainin g. I am the least mechanically minded person on the planet and I do my own oil changes.
There are so many oil threads. Try doing a search and you will be inundated with information about oil.

Many, many people including me use Mobile1 0w40. My mechanic during a service used Fuchs. Be guided by your mechanic, as long as it is LLO1. Don't lose sleep over it.

I just bought a Haynes Manual for my 2001 E46 318i from England, RHD. USA did not import the E46 318i so there is no good looking there.
Try http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=150973966039 This one covers our M43TU1.9 engine. Cheers
