NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has been indicted on 21 federal corruption charges including wire fraud, bribery and money laundering. The charges are the outgrowth of a City Hall corruption investigation that already has resulted in guilty pleas by two former city officials and two businessmen.

The counts include wire fraud, bribery, money laundering, filing false tax returns and conspiracy.

Nagin, a former cable television executive, was a political novice before being elected to his first term as mayor in 2002, buoyed by strong support from white voters.

Hurricane Katrina in 2005 elevated Nagin to the national stage, where he gained a reputation for colorful and sometimes cringe-inducing rhetoric.

During a radio interview broadcast in the storm's early aftermath, he angrily pleaded with federal officials to "get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

In January 2006, he apologized for a Martin Luther King Day speech in which he predicted New Orleans would be a "chocolate city" and asserted that "God was mad at America."

Strong support from black voters helped Nagin win re-election in 2006 despite widespread criticism of his post-Katrina leadership. But the glacial pace of rebuilding, a surge in violent crime and the budding City Hall corruption investigation chipped away at Nagin's popularity during his second term.

Nagin could not seek a third consecutive term because of term limits. Mitch Landrieu, who ran against Nagin in 2006, succeeded him in 2010.

Nagin has largely steered clear of the political arena since he left office. On his Twitter account, he describes his current occupations as author, public speaker and "green energy entrepreneur." He wrote a self-published memoir called "Katrina's Secrets: Storms After the Storm."

Dem or Repub........I am glad to see a corrupt politician get their comeuppance.

What has surprised me is the recent news about Lance Armstrong. I never doubted he may have used steroids, but I had no idea he was as mean, hateful and vindictive that they are now reporting.

They are probably close. I think the national attention caused by Katrina exposed the rest of the USA to what us in the South knew - that New Orleans is a big sh!thole - politically and socially.

But it is my kind of sh!thole. I love it, even with all its' faults.

Having followed cycling since the 70's, I had no doubt about the PEDs and Armstrong was an a$$hat in his pre-cancer race career as well. He was barely tolerable before he won the world road race championship in '93. After that, forget about it.

It is truly regrettable. After the Festina arrests in 97, the 98 tour seemed pretty clean. Everybody was paranoid about a repeat of that. And you saw Marco Pantani win. Loved to watch Pantani race. The closest rider, I ever saw, to come close to the greatest cyclist of all Eddy "the cannibal" Merckx. It was the interesting thing about Armstrong, for as much of a supreme egoist as he is, he would always say, Eddy was the greatest rider of all. That was, for me, the irrefutable proof Armstrong was doping. If he had done it clean, he would have gladly given himself that title. But, he knew those wins were a lie.

It is a great sport. There are many facets to it. Not just the grand tours, but, the one day classics are awesome. Liege Bastogne Liege, Paris Roubaix, Milan San Remo, Fleche Wallonne. Milan San Remo is 298km (185 miles), the mud and cobbles of Paris Roubaix, rain or shine. Hell, even snow at places like Sestriere and Alpe d'Huez. The strategy involved and how it evolves and changes within the race. I find it a much more interesting and engaging sport than golf or baseball or (heaven help us all) cricket.
