Wanted: ME co-op, west coast

Currently a 3rd year ME major at RIT.

Super brief overview of what I'm bringing to the table other than what I've learned at RIT so far:
On the Formula SAE team (electrical lead for next years car), previous degrees in Autobody and Business Administration, 2 years experience at a BMW, Benz, Audi, etc dealership, 2 years experience in customer service.

I'm looking to get something on the west coast (or Europe!), 3-6 mos., can start Aug 20th.

Where on the west coast? Any preferences as far as industry or anything else? We have an intern who will be leaving in a few weeks and may be looking for someone else.

Not necessarily, just something where I'd be given legit responsibilities instead of making copies and shuffling papers.

Location doesn't matter either, I guess. Ideally it would be something close the the beach and mountains! haha.

a MechE running an EE position? howd that work out? What did you guys finish in design? competition overall?

generally MEs are more capable with applied EE design and implementation than EEs. power EE are pretty good, but any other EE will most likely have a hard time designing any circuitry that can actually do something useful.

The electrical system worked great, besides a few issues with the batteries it worked very reliably. It's not really an EE positon though; I'm not designing boards or crazy circuits, just calculations to size wire properly and being conscious of what wires to shield. Other than that it's mainly creating the schematic, wire placement in the 3d model, and manufacturing of the harness. This year I do have a freshman EE who seems like he will be able to do this next year and a 3rd year CS that re-designed the steering wheel board and did some coding for me.

In Germany we didn't make design finals but placed 5th overall. Here are the results from last year: http://www.rit.edu/kgcoe/formula/pages/f20.php. Typically there aren't any judges for electrical systems in the combustion competition so I don't do too much talking at design but there are a few powertrain guys who are sometimes interested in what I have to say.

And if you don't recruit any EE's who are competent enough to lead the position then someone else has to figure it out. For example, last year our Chief Engineer was a CS Major. I think what degree one is pursuing isn't a statement of what they are capable of, it's more a function of drive and ability to self-teach.

Yea, I guess we had different experience. At Cornell (ages ago) we had traction control, electronic wastegate, fuel injection, etc.

I'm looking to get out of my industry and racecar engineering would be a perfect place for me to go.

We have all of those things, but it's controlled by Motec so the EE part is done. There have been attempts at one-off ecu's in the past that never made it anywhere as far as I know

NASCAR would be something I'd be interested in. I know one person who recently left Tesla for a NASCAR team but any other contacts are helpful.
